well girls I got that machine I posted. I hope it is a good one. This is my first one so I have a lot to learn. Haven't found out when I can pick it up yet. I guess I'll be asking lots of questions.

Denise , you got a steal on that machine! the fact it still has it's original cover and the manuals for the machine AND for the attachments! Most of your reading "work" is done for you. I had to hunt high and low to find manuals online and for one of my machines I only found "similar' instructions on another make. I got no attachments for any (although Georgann sent me a box of attachments to fit one of the machines!! ((HUGS)) ) Pat yourself on the back for the good find, and arm yourself with WD-40 and sewing machine oil! Can't wait to hear about it when you get it!

Thanks girls,
Hope you won't mind lots of questions. What do you clean them with? The machine itself I mean. My husband is probably going to pick it up on Tuesday if we hear from the seller. I am never sure about whether something is a good deal. I was a little surprised to get it for that price too. Made me a little leary as the other bidder never went higher than the opening bid. And I think someone said he was a seller of treadles too. Keep up the pep talks and I should be fine as I go along. :)

Right now I am sewing on a singer 99 model. I love it. Has all the attachments but I don't know how to use any of them. I got it on ebay in a blonde maple cabinet for 80 bucks. I love it. It was very well cared for. My mom has one but since it is designated to someone else I decided to see if I could find one. I have had it for about a year or so.

dont be leary your machine is worth a lot more than 36 bucks..you have to remember, when things are for pick up, people are not very interested.

there is sewing machine cleaner and polish at most sewing machine stores or shops that fix sewing machines..cannot remember the name...look on google. any way..you got a grand machine..and if you hate it, let me know!

Treadle On is an awesome site. People from that forum really help you out. They helped me identify my machine, etc. I bought needles from one of the forum members. jo

I avoid ebay, I had a couple of bad experiences and I'm done...... I do love craig's list though. I give alot of things away free there, it's really cost prohibitive in Alaska to ship alot of things back and forth...
I couldn't find makeroomforjo, but I did find this EXQUISITE machine, if I could afford, this one is so lovely......... but I really love my little new home... jo

We have purchased 4 vehicles on ebay and one of my daughters just got hers from ebay. We have really been fortunate on there with the vehicles.
That is one mint machine Jo. Beautiful!

I wanted to ask y'all which you prefer........treadle or hand crank?? Do you need that extra hand to hold the fabric???? (I have a clue since this *is* "Treadlin' along"...LOL)

looks really good for $50...is it missing 2 drawers or not? some do not have them on both sides, but regardless...1902 machine with a good looking cabinet. See if it has all its working parts...or if the missing pieces can be replaced easily!

I like treadles, ut those hand cranks are nagging on me to start my collection...one thing at a time Jess...one thing at a time!

It does appear to be missing the right side drawers. I'd be asking more questions~if the head is inoperable it may be a $50 pile of parts. If it works, it would be a cheap starter. All depends on what you are looking to do with a treadle. Do you want a "fixer upper" that you want to work on and hopefully restore, or do you want a low cost introduction to treadles that you'll just be sewing on, but aren't really looking to invest much more into. You learn a bunch with hands-on fiddling~you never really know the condition of a machine until you work with it yourself. Most people selling them are in no way experts. I spent $25 on my first machine and 0 on my 2nd, but working on them myself I gained so much information that I could make an informed decision on spending $100 on my 3rd. You start learning what to look for and what to avoid.

I think after you somewhat have the hang of treadles in general, you just naturally start looking to upgrade. You've got your machines up and running, see one in pristine condition for a good price and immediately think, "well, I could sell the other Red Eye ,I'm not totally attached to, and put that $$ towards this other one ....." LOL

I had to laugh while at my Friday Stitch 'n [bleep]. I was telling the other gals
about my treadles and swapping stories and one of the younger gals said, "I bet you could get a lot of $$ for those these days". I said, "you can find half a dozen at the antique mall down the street, and there are 2 workable ones well under $100 that have been sitting there for some time". The older ladies were more interested in the nostalgia & sewing ability than the turnover value. That's why I value this particular group of older ladies~$$ is not the driving force in their lives, and they so freely share insight & wonderful memories.

Just some treadling thoughts~other than reading through the links previously posted,
doing research on your own is the best way to learn about these treadles. When I'd ask Jessica a question like, "where the heck do you get belts?" She'd say something like,"check Ebay, there are lots there"~ cking Ebay lead to sourcing for other parts I needed as well, or parts I didn't even know I needed.(rather than specifically telling me to "go here", it made me search and compare a bit~good mothering skills that girl has)
Another plus about Ebay is it gives you a frame of reference as to going prices on various machines in various stages of condition in various parts of the country, so that when you do go looking, you can know a ballpark of what you should or shouldn't be spending, and how common certain machines are or aren't.
