I just wanted to let you know that I posted information today over at the main forum about our upcoming Apple Festival at MJF. Like previous years, I am hosting an apple swap as well as doing an apple giveaway. If you are interested, please sign up for one or both.

September always kicks off Apple Season with our Annual Apple Festival Celebration. It is always fun to exchange stories, recipes and other information about apples.

Winnie I saw your posts and have been looking at apple pie recipes for our Apple Pie Sunday. It's that time of year so I gotta make my one pie for the year.

That's great, Winnie. I have a copy of her book that I purchased a while ago. It has great recipes in it.

Winnie - When is Apple Pie Sunday?

Sara - Are you going to try your cast iron pie pan? I am thinking I will use mine.

Linda you know I am. It will be the first time to use it but I have enjoyed it hanging on the wall. Whatever apple pie recipe I decide on will be adapted for cast iron temperature and time. The recipe I'm lending to is one out of a 1942 WWII Victory Cookbook.

Yes, Apple Pie Sunday is September 29th this year. It is always the last Sunday of the month of September to be a sort of wrap up to the Festival activities.

Sara, I am intrigued about the WWII Apple pie recipe. Could you share that? I have been doing a lot of reading about the First and Second World Wars for the past 5 years. I am always intrigued with the recipes developed when rationing was in place.

Winnie I just posted the Victory Apple Pie recipe on Recipe tread. I was wrong about the date. My other WWII cookbook is 1942. This cookbook was first published in 1944 - my 4th edition is 1946.

I was afraid of that. September 29th is the day we arrive back to Miami from our Caribbean cruise. May have to stop and have a piece of apple pie on the ship before we get off, if I can find one. LOL!

Linda, I imagine that apple pie might be an option on the ship one of the days close to Sept. 29 so you might just celebrate early!! We are getting home from Ireland on September 25 and then we are supposed to go out of town two days later. Most likely, I will have all of my ingredients together before I leave so that making the pie Sunday afternoon will be easy. After we set the reservation for this trip last Spring, I didn't know that we would end up having to go out of town two days later. Which I might add, was not something I wanted to do at all! When we get home from a long trip, I am usually dead tired and have trouble getting adjusted back to the big time change. Jet lag is a real thing for me, but hubby seems to be immune to it. LInda, enjoy your cruise and I hope there are no hurricanes making the seas rough.

I, too, am hoping the hurricanes are long gone when we cruise. We are going to San Juan, St. Thomas, and 2 other islands, so I hope everything is okay at those countries. Looks like San Juan may get hit again.

Linda are you going to St. Thomas and St. John? I remember the cruise ships stopping in the harbor, when we were staying on St. Thomas long ago. You sould be safe there. Of course you can choose not to leave the ship...to go shopping!!! Gosh, that must have been thirty years ago! It was while we were there that saw my first huge wedding reception. All of the bridal party dressed in long pink dresses! They had a sit down dinner for over 200 people, complete with white tablecloths, centerpieces on each table. Wow that daddy spent some $$$$$$!!! It was beautiful!!

I was vacationing there with my college friend and her daughter. We were there for a week, with time to wander about, shop and explore. I sunburned the top of my head, did not even know it until I began to peel after coming home. The day we took the ferry boat over to St. John, was my very first mango eating experience. We were on a tour vehicle(open air), when our driver suddenly stopped, got down and said he would be right back. We watched him run down a slope to the forest floor below. He was intently looking about, picking up things from the ground, some he discarded. When he got back up on the four vehicle, he gave everyone of us a fruit. He insisted we bite into the end to peel away some of the greenish cover. Wow, sweet, sticky, messy but so delicious. Of course a chorus of voices that out, "what is this called?" He told us, but when we first came home. ..they were not available in our country grocery store. Now we can buy them but they are not the same. I will say they are much tastier than the Than we tried on the big island of Hawaii.
