We went up to the Atlanta area this weekend to visit my sister who we moved there in November for her declining memory. We had a really nice visit! The place is lovely and her apartment is just the perfect size for her and her dog. She seemed really stable and steady which is what my niece says too. When I last saw her in November, we were packing up her house and she was understandably unsure of her future and moving from her home. It was good to see her settled and happy to see us.Her short term memory is still compromised but her attitude seemed cheerful and she enjoyed having us come up.

We also got a chance to see the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library. It is a beautiful place in downtown Atlanta and ther exhibits were interesting and revealing of so many details of his life. We both enjoyed it a great deal and it was the first presidential library that we have ever had the chance to be close enough to to visit. It is also high Spring in Atlanta and the landscaping of the grounds was just so southern and pretty.

Then on the way home, we stopped at Warm Springs, Ga. to visit the "Little White House”of Franklin D. Roosevelt. I was so taken by how small and simple this place was. FDR loved to go there and built it to be very simple and unpretentious. It was the location of the warm thermal pools where he benefitted from swimming in them to strengthen his body after the devastation of Polio. The pools are no longer in use but the story of when they helped hundreds of Polio victims was poignant. I had a playmate, growing up, who got Polio and was significantly impaired in one leg. I remember going with her to Physical Thereapy sometimes and also swimming with her in the pool where therapy was done during the Summer. FDR purchased the warm springs property and helped create a rehabilitation hospital for any Americans that wanted to come and try pool therapy to improve mobility following Polio. During this time of the 1930s-1940s, he started a fundraising organization to look for a cure or a Polio vaccine. In 1950s both Dr. Salk and Dr. Sabin developed the first effective Polio vaccines which led to the control and eradication of Polio, nationally by the early 1960s. I remember going to the local high school on a Sunday afternoon to take the Sabin vaccine which was vaccine drops on a sugar cube. Did any of you get that same vaccine in the 1950s? Now that start Polio vaccine drops on infants very early because they are so vulnerable. Last year, I read, there were 263 cases of Polio coming from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Often these countries lack the funding and ability to reach remote children with the vaccine and so cases still do happen.

All in all, this weekend was both a wonderful visit to see my sister, and to learn more about our country . Can't beat that for fun!!

Yes Winnie I got that vaccine on the sugar cube. I was 18 when we stood in a very long line at the local rec hall. Seems as if we went again for another dose. I was 14 when a man brought his kids to our house so he could get the water cans for the crew that night. Next day his son, also 14 was placed in an iron lung. I have always wondered why him, not us or his siblings. I remember everyone lived in fear.

Winnie that was wonderful you were able to visit your sister. It's good to hear she is doing well in her new place.
I thought we were going to have just us my dd and family and my son for Easter. Turns out my brother in law and nephew can make it and two of my son's friends want to know if they can spend Easter with us. Honestly it is a good feeling when you find out others want to be with us and not because they are family and feel like they should.

Yardman here today to mow & edge my frontyard. So happy my days of mowing are behind me. Around June he will weed eat where needed in backyard - that's all it takes to keep the backyard looking good because of all the shade.

Feeling quite exhausted this evening. Worked in the garage all day. We have accumulated so much junk in 29 years. Dd and her family are coming over in a few minutes to celebrate her birthday. Hoping to dodge the rain tomorrow to more done.
I am an organizer by nature and there is a lot to go through and also finding a place to store it all while we repair/ rebuild the building. Maybe tearing down and starting over. Very old building and I don't feel very safe even being in there.

Going on little sleep today. Dd had to take Charlie her youngest to the ER last night. They've only been home a couple hrs. She called at 2 and I was still awake so we went and picked up the older 2.
Haven't heard the results yet. But hoping they get sleep. I had to take something to sleep around 4 this morning so I'm going on about 4 hrs myself. Will update when I know what they found out.

Such a cute picture of Lily June, Connie. She is so photogenic!

Sorry to hear about Charlie, Denise. Please keep us posted.

We are back from vacation and have SO much to catch up with. I'm going out to mow the yard now. Ed went to check on his cows. All 10 are accounted for. LOL!

Denise, I feel your garage pain! I can't believe that we actually parked a car in ours at one time....
My son, who has been out of highschool for 16 years, moved a desk into our garage that he was working on in woods class and didn't get finished. Guess what is still sitting in the middle of the garage??? Everything in there stresses me out!
