Sara, I never knew that. I will have to keep that in mind for my tomatoes. They have grown larger than I expected, so mine may need to be pruned as they become closer.
I'm wondering if this holds true for humid summers. I have had large tomato plants planted close together with no problems and the tomato fields around here are also planted close with no pruning. We have very dry summers so maybe that is the difference.

Judith, I think high humidity has a lot to do with it.
Yesterday I gave one sister six tomatoes ranging from medium to small. The tomatoes are growing in clusters so they are not growing larger. Guess I should have taken some of the blossoms off.
This morning I harvested eight more tomatoes, med to small. I will keep two and my other sister will take six. Many more green ones on the vines.
