Sara, I never knew that. I will have to keep that in mind for my tomatoes. They have grown larger than I expected, so mine may need to be pruned as they become closer.

I'm wondering if this holds true for humid summers. I have had large tomato plants planted close together with no problems and the tomato fields around here are also planted close with no pruning. We have very dry summers so maybe that is the difference.

Judith, I think high humidity has a lot to do with it.

Yesterday I gave one sister six tomatoes ranging from medium to small. The tomatoes are growing in clusters so they are not growing larger. Guess I should have taken some of the blossoms off.

This morning I harvested eight more tomatoes, med to small. I will keep two and my other sister will take six. Many more green ones on the vines.

All my plants are hanging in there but sure could use a long soaking rain, they can take city water just for so long.

My oak tree is starting to drop leaves. Not pretty colorful leaves just brown and dead leaves. Many green leaves to turn so I will be raking leaves into Feb. While I am raking, I will have to remember that those leaves shaded my house all summer long. If you look for it there is always some good in the bad.

Connie, your zinnias are beautiful. We're cooling down too but still a lot of days in the high 90s to come.

Beautiful flowers!
We're having an anomaly today-- it's only 70 now. That's never ever happens here in August. Back to normal 90s-100s next week.

Well, the heat has gotten the best of the tomatoes and me. I picked the last one yesterday and had it on a cream cheese sandwich. In the coming days I will clean up the tomato vines to get ready to plant MJF garlic. I know I said I would never do garlic again but by now I should know better to never say never. The thing I like about garlic is that it is harvested before July so I don't have to care for them during the really hot/dry months.

I also moved the two hanging baskets to the deck so there is nothing left on the east side of the house to care for. Watering on the deck is so much easier. I know come next spring I will fill all the raised beds again but for now I am done with them all.

Sara, I'm doing sane as you. Pruning the black eyed Susan's.
Moving pots to the shade. Moved the only pot left on the front porch to the back patio.
Nothing to water on front porch.
Going to be high of 99 in a few days!

Connie, by the end of August I can be quite brutal when it comes to tearing out and letting plants go that are past their prime.

Isn’t it great that “to everything there is a season”? So exciting to see those first little seeds send up their tiny green sprouts and a bit later savor the first ruby red tomato. Then that day that I NEVER want to see another zucchini! But then Spring rolls around again . . .

When asked “How are you?”, I reply, “Better than good!”

WhenI am so tired of summer and endless heat, finally fall arrives, then winter. Always sometime in the coldest days of winter I'll say "I want to remember this day come next August".

It rained during the night so I dug up the tomato roots this morning. Will read up on what to add to the soil for garlic so the raised beds will be ready when I have the garlic bulbs.

Alot of my garden harvest is over. Of course some still keeping me busy. I need to get back to weeding. I turned my back and everything is a mess again. Good luck with the garlic growing. I plant every year in my herb bed around Oct 12. I enjoy every season, looking forward to each process and finally being done. lol

1 raised bed was cleaned up a week ago. I added bag of fresh soil and mixed it in.
I planted bok choy and swiss chard seeds. I am also trying for 5th time to grow summer squash. I do have mesh covering over the tiny plants. Squash bugs have been a pain this summer. I will let other bed with scraggly tomatoes for another day. My husband still enjoying the last few sungold cherry tomatoes. That raised bed needs soil and then I'll plant sugar snap peas. I am a summer gal, but this year intense heat/humidity was too much. And I look forward to an early Autumn season, but do not care for bitter cold winters.

Today's good mood brought to you by a lot of coffee!!!

Tara, you have been busy cleaning out raised beds and planting seeds for a fall harvest.

Michelle, one thing you can count on about weeds is they do grow as soon as you turn your back.

After mowing grass, I spent some time weed wacking and weeding beds. At least a few of them look so much better. I pooped out yesterday, so did not finish. This morning I woke to rain and lightening like crazy. That means a day to house clean. haha.

I'm replanting more sugar snap peas... squirrels in raised bed again.
I need to sprinkle hot pepper flakes on soil and see if they helps keeps these rodents away

Tara, I'm sorry you have to replant your sugar snap peas. I've used red pepper flakes to keep stray cats out of my flower beds so should work for squirrels too.
