I too remember drinking tang as a kid it was yummy. You know I was raised in a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, and I do not remember it being so very hot, nor do I remember ever complaining about it. In the summer we were outdoors all day until the street lights came on then you went in for supper. But the one thing I do remember and hated was the dreaded mosquitoes! They were relentless!! I remember right around dusk the mosquito truck coming by our neighborhood to spray them. The smell was horrible and we use to go running into the house hollering and gagging the whole way saying that he was coming and covering our nose and mouth trying not to breath it! I am sooooo, happy they do not spray anymore for mosquitoes that way. Was this a common practice where y’all grew up?

Debbie several years back when West Nile Virus was all over Texas cities/towns sprayed for mosquitoes. The difference now and when I was little was we were warned when the trucks would be coming by. They notified us by phone and newspaper to stay in during those hours.

I am not sure if the folks who took care of me got a phone call or not, but we knew just about the time it came to our neighborhood and we knew to get home or else:-)

Yes it is a treasure, that pitcher now holds maple syrup, my husband loves Vermont maple syrup so much he even drinks it in a shot glass poured from the tang pitcher!

Debbie-They didn't spray for mosquitoes but we did have crop dusters go over the farm fields when I was growing up. I always worried back then if it was dangerous to breathe whatever it was they dropping on the crops. Sadly all the farm fields became filled in the 70's with subdivisions.
Sheila-Good luck finding the glasses to go with your Tang picture. I didn't know the Tang brand had glassware to go with their product.
Enjoy what's left of July! Dawn in IL

Every weekend I call my parents to see how they are and talk about my week. This Sunday I told my dad about the ribbons I won in the Germantown Fair. He said that I came by it naturally. His mother used to can - he said they were like works of art. She won awards at fairs and other ladies didn't enter if they knew she had canned goods because she'd always win. I never knew this about her. To me she was my country grandma, who had a big garden, let us help gather eggs from cranky chickens, and made kolache. She passed away when a drunk driver hit her car. I like to think that belonging to MJF brings me closer to her. The bigger boy in the overalls is my dad.

Way to go Vanessa on winning those ribbons. Winning at a fair is all about details and of course looks. Right down to aligning your lid lettering, if any, with the lettering on the jar. Great picture!!

Congratulations Vanessa on winning your ribbons at the fair, what fun. Isn’t it wonderful to learn something about your Grandmother after all these years that you did not know? Brings her closer and you remember all the wonderful memories you have of her. Thank you for sharing.

It makes my heart happy to hear about your fair entries! It used to be a big deal at our county fair but sadly has dwindled down to nothing:(. Congratulations!!!!

My peach custard pie won a blue ribbon in "other pie" category, I made a salted caramel bundt cake that got a red ribbon for bundts, and blue ribbons for oatmeal and grape jelly thumbprint cookies and jello popcorn balls in "other candy".

Congratulations to our Sara (Yellow Rose) for being honored as our October FGOTM. Sara is a true blue Farmgirl!
I have been wondering what our Farmgirls did to welcome fall and the days getting shorter when you were young? I do not remember being so in tuned to the change of seasons as we are now. Then again we were not farmers etc. it is such a joy to me now to welcome in the change of season with my Farmgirl Sisters.

Debbie thanks for the sweet words.
Fall meant back to school. Back then in Texas school didn't start until after Labor Day because the farm kids had to help with the harvest whether it was cotton, corn, wheat, or another crop. A new year of school meant we got a new pair of shoes and clothes. Other than that, I don't remember decorating for fall but we did look forward to Halloween and trick & treating.
Fall did bring chores to get ready for winter like hanging quilts and blankets on the clothesline to air out. They had been washed and put away clean in early summer.

I just stumbled onto this thread and found it fun, sweet and interesting. I will be 75 on December 17th . . . how did that happen?! I grew up on a farm and currently live on 3 acres of that farm that my dad deeded to us in the 1980s so we could build a house. Our first house was log and we did all the logging ourselves, milling the logs and lumber, building the house. I've never done such physically hard labor in my life!! We had two small kiddos at the time and no income. In the summer of 1994 that house burned down due an arson fire . . . fortunately we had good insurance and were able to rebuild. Our new house is not log, however, because we could no longer get a permit to cut house logs. But God blessed us through all of this . . .and it was STRESSFUL . . . and we miraculously were able to become debt free!
I'll be back sometime to tell you more! Thanks for listening! CJ

Hi CJ, welcome, so happy to see you here and hear of your life. Everyone has and had such interesting lives and I enjoy reading about them. Sadly it do not have any childhood stories to share so I very much want to learn and hear everyone else’s stories.

I don't have a story today just some random thoughts.
Been working in my kitchen today, deep cleaning, and what used to take me minutes to do now takes longer. When I am washing, wiping, and scrubbing I think I am as fast as I always was but when I look at the clock more time as gone by then I thought. What do I make of me doing things slower well I've come to the conclusion that I just won't give it another thought and just be grateful I still get things done.
One more thought before I get off my laptop and go have a 7 oz coke and do a little chair rocking.
One of the things I have learned is that being contented is my choice and it's up to me to make that choice. Happiness is dependent on one's circumstances and others. Contentment comes when you choose to be contented no matter what is going on around you.

Before the first of the year, I like to put the old year to bed. I look back on the good times and rejoice that I had them; and make peace with the bad times.
