This morning I harvested garlic scapes to preserve in olive oil & apple cider vinegar for cooking.
We have had more cloudy days then sunny, so I had given up on the garlic making scapes this year. Went out this morning to check on the garlic and the scapes seemed to have appeared overnight. That's one of the things I like about gardening there are always surprises.

I miss my days being brought up on a farm. Seeing everything grow and then the harvest. Sounds like you are pretty good at what you do. Nancy Jo

Oh I love Garlic too and I use a lot of it cooking. It is probably too late this year to plant any so maybe next year.

Debbie, garlic is planted in the fall so you have time to get your bed ready. It is harvested the next year in June. One of the reasons I like growing garlic is it's out of the ground before it really heats up in Texas and I have to water every day.
The garlic scapes should have appeared in the spring, but they were late this year. The leaves are starting to yellow so in a couple of weeks the garlic should be ready to harvest.
Nancy Jo, thanks for the nice compliment, but like all gardeners I have my good and bad years.
Laurie, give garlic a try. I started out planting garlic from the grocery store before I bought garlic from MaryJane Farm. My garlic is planted in two large galvanized tubs.

Congrats on your scapes! You are doing exactly what I would do with mine if I had any. I planted mine in galvanized tubs also, but the below zero temps we had were a bit too much for the cloves and they all died. Planted potatoes there instead this spring.

Several years ago I lost my garlic when temps got down to 7 below zero. Lisa, I hope your potatoes do good for you. I do like new potatoes with plenty of butter.

No scapes here in Wisconsin yet. I have good sized garlic plants, and the leaves are starting to yellow on the tips. We have been dry and I am back to watering things again.

Sara, that's great your garlic decided to surprise you. I still want to get a spot in my garden for some garlic. Hopefully I can get around to it this year. Garlic is always delicious on just about anything lol!

I have to grow flowers and Veggies on a smale scale now because of health issues. I do container and raised bed by my patio. The cherry tomatoes and Green beans are almost ready for Harvest.

Connie your gardens are beautiful. I had to look twice to make sure the chickens weren't real. Like you I deal with MS and do most of my gardening in containers and galvanized tubs.

Thank you Sara! I got those chickens from Walmart Garden center. They are made of Tin. We both know how The heat affects MS! so I try to get planted while it's still cool. I water in the evening. Lily June is 8 now and she loves to water. She loves to eat the Cherry Tomatoes right off the vine. I have 4 Cherry and 2 Beefsteak Tomatoes all in containers. They do well.

Connie, love it all. At first glance I thought the chickens were real. I am picking cukes and green beans every other day. Got to can the cukes. I've already made a cucumber tomato and onion salad. We can change our gardens to our needs.

Lovely garden Connie! Enjoy your soon to be ready tomatoes and green beans. We still have a little while until our tomatoes and green beans are ready. We had a super late start this year. But I did pick my first 3 sugar snap peas yesterday, so everything will be ready before I know it.

Connie your flowers look so pretty, and your tomatoes are looking good. My Rhubarb is up I have harvested some to freeze for pies later and waiting & hoping the other stalks will continue to grow, the red stalks are so pretty. I have also picked some dill, my husband made a raised bed, and I planted herbs. Laster year I had to buy a small jar of dill and it was $6, I told him that I would be growing some and drying it because I was so shocked over the price I had to pay. I love the smell of dill, I like to make a white sauce and add dill to it then put the sauce over boiled potatoes with a touch of butter yummy.

The leaves of one tub of garlic were all turning brown so I harvested it this morning. The garlic was not quite ready but it couldn't stay in the ground any longer. Once the leaves start dying you have to get the garlic out. The garlic is half the size it should be, too many dark and wet days, not enough sun. After it is cured for a month I will dry it and make garlic powder. The other tub may be ready to harvest next week but I would rather it be week after next so the bulbs will be bigger and make better keepers .

Sheila I know what you mean about the price of herbs! I try to grow & dry quite a few. Will be looking up a recipe for a white dill sauce-sounds delicious on those potatoes! |

Sara, remember to save some garlic for planting this fall, or whenever you plant garlic. I have picked a few radishes and that is all so far. replanted corn, lettuce and carrots. I am staying on top of the weeds.

Seems like here in Texas the weeds are the only thing thriving. Everything else is slow growing or stunted.
Michelle, I plan on saving garlic to plant in the fall. Hopefully next year will be a better year for garlic and all other garden plants.
I woke at four this morning so it was a good time to be in my Yellow Rose Cottage before the sun came up. I gathered the garlic together into three bundles. If the garlic was normal size it would have been 5 or 6 bundles. The garlic is now hanging in the hall bathroom on the shower rod. There's a A/C vent in there and it's dark so the garlic should be cured in a month. Next week the other tub should be ready to harvest.
