We're lucky, we have our 50 acres, but I'm so conflicted. My stepsons are in many activites in the town we work in, and they go to school in. It's 30 minutes from our house. So, if they have an activity at 6:30, someone stays in town with them, and we don't get home until 8-9pm.
We have the farm, but we're never there!
Sometimes I think we should move into town until they're out of the house.
How do the rest of you deal with this? |

| Thats the fun of living out in the country I guess. If that is what you want to call it. We are 8 miles from town, but you are a whole lot further. You have to pick and choose, and sometimes say no. Either that or live with it all. It is hard to do that though. Eventually someone will be old enough to drive, but then you have all the worry that goes with it. We try to car pool when we can. Good luck Michele |

Hi Alicia,
Someone warned me about this very thing when we were looking at a property. At the moment, we live 10 minutes from town, not bad at all, but we are looking at properties about 30 minutes out. I limit my kids activities to one each a week. BUT he said, once they are teenagers they won't want that sort of restriction put on them and he spends most weeknights and all day Saturday driving different children to different sports, dance, parties, whatever. All the coffee shops in town know him as it isn't worth going home in between dropping them off and picking them up again.
I don't really have an answer - if you find one let us all know!!
Although with one of my daughters dance classes, another mum and I would take turns each week. One week, her daughter would come home from school to our house and I would take them both in, and the next week my daughter would go to her house. Maybe someone lives near you?

| We live 20 minutes from town, my kids are still young and we are just starting to deal with this. I plan on limiting them to one extra activity a year. Maybe next school year you could give them a choice. |

Hey...if you read my blog...there is a little write up on it about my kids and living so far from town...therefor..during the school year we live at our house in town...and only go to the farm in the summer...it is getting better though...we now have 3 that drive...only 2 more to go and we will live in the country full time.

Fawn,
We've thought of doing the same thing. We can't afford a farm closer to town, and it feels wrong to do so much driving.
We spend 7% of our income on gas! And we carpool, and I have a Camery! We're doing almost as good as we can!

One thing you could try is to find a mom or two who are in the same situation. Then, take turns taking each other's children for dinner and then a ride home after the activity! That way, you are only away from home a few nights a week, and that extra hour or two that they are gone you could give yourself to do a craft, project, nap, read a book, etc! Just think of it as mom time, we all need it that's for sure!

With a large family & mini-farming, we have always let the kids, older that 12, choose only 1 extra activity per year per kid. That has cut down on the driving, plus we tried to carpool. The kids always go to church youth group activities & sports.
