in the beginning of my waterbath canning days...my grandmother told me about "old way"--it works great... Its just a great big pot with a dishtowel in the bottom..deep enough to hold your jars and water over it. I still use this method from time to time if i cant get to my canner. Have fun!

I bet that was me...I do it all the time. I use all my big pots when I am doing alot of canning..especially for 1/2 pint jars..I do alot of salsa and jams and stuff in those. Easy to find a pot tall enough to have water an inch over those...and the dish towel works great!

I found mine at the hardware store. In the deep, dark recesses of the basement. Living in the city - it's harder to find them. But they're out there! |

Mikki, You might check out walmart. The ones around here have all that stuff out already. I have a large on and a smaller one. One of the elderly ladies in our church gave me the large for 2.00 when she heard I liked to can. Sometimes it pays to ask around. You never know what someone may have they are not using. Denise

I was looking for something out of season at the hardware store Sunday. They let me go to the storage garage to look. It doesn't hurt to ask at the counter - maybe they have it in storage.

I have also seen them out at Walmart, along with the jars and such. Just make sure the rack is inside when you are buying it, because otherwise, you will just have another big pot. |

If you have a local Agway or farming/gardening center, they will have them. Also, I just used my lobster pot and my spaghetti pot for the most part anyway. As long as the water covers them, you are good to go. |

Sheryl-lyn...great minds think alike...LOL I use my turkey fryer. Hubby bought it for my, but truth be told, I wanted it for canning. I do beets every year, and this also allows me to boil outside, where I do not have to worry about getting anything red. It is amazing what you can change and modify to suit your own needs. MJ

Our walmart still don't have them out. Well the neighboring towns w-mart. We don't have anything but a hucks/gas station, a bigfoot, and a truckstop. lol Not a very big place here. Plus I live 10 miles out of town. Out in the boonies right where I like it. I even went to an Orcheln and they didn't have it. There's an Ace hardware a few miles away, I may call there. I'm going to do the dishtowel thing in a stockpot and when I find a canner I'll get one. Still havent' tried, been busy with other projects. Thanks for all the great info friends!!! ~~Blessings, Mikki
