There has been a recall of a dry food, Feline Hill's Prescription diet md - so far it is the only dry food recalled. They are now saying it is melamine that got into to food.

I just got an email from the people that make IAMS and Eukanuba saying all their dry foods were safe. They do not use wheat gluten in any of their products. I'm getting a little concerned about what to feed my poor cats. Guess I'll go back to IAMS or there is a natural pet food store I'm going to check out.

I'd suggest doing a google search and finding a natural/organic food. We all cherish our pets, so to me the higher price and non-mainstream food is far more superior.
In a pinch , I use Purinaone but with some reluctance these days. |

I feed my dog the Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance foods. They do not have a bunch of ingredients like some foods do. She is currently on Fish and Sweet Potato with Flax Seed. I am pretty sure they make cat foods as well. My vet suggested that I do not feed her Nutro brand though, since it has been her experience that Nutro causes horrible bowel problems with a lot of dogs- especially initially.

| I'm with Alee on the Natural Balance food. I feed it to our four cats, and they are visibly more healthy. There's no questionable ingredients that may be contaminated, either. I'm not sure that pet food manufacturers are allowed to put 'organic' on their labels anymore. I thought they had stopped that last October, maybe somebody could fill me in. A good dog food with all natural ingredients, no by-products or fillers, is the Kirkland brand, if you go to Costco. Their cat food isn't good, though. |

And a word on Organic pet foods or any food for that matter. Unless it has the certified USDA seal it's not 100% organic.
And I agree. "natural" , "wholesome" and other similar ambigious words are not regulated, nor are they checked up on by the USDA either. There are no laws holding big companies to the wording on packaging.
READ the labels and research the ingredients. If you can't pronounce it, look it up. You'd be surprized!
If all the recent hubbub is all that upsetting......as it should be, make a switch to a smaller, wholistic, organic pet food company. If no such resource is available in your area, lots of companies do ship. The shipping fee is high, but so are costly vet bills! |
