Do any of you raise honeybees? I heard that there is an illness wiping the nation's honeybees, and that they expect up to 80% bee casualties when the hives are openned up this season. What a horrifying prospect. How are your bees? Have you seen any around yet?

Here's an article about it:

I heard all about this on NPR the other morning and then on Martha Stewart she mentioned it as well. It seem to be a huge problem for bee keepers in the country. But not only for the prospects of honey production, but also fruits and veggies. Bees are the #1 pollinators of the fruits and veggies produced in this country as well. Scary when you really think about the ripple effect of this.

My friend who keeps 4 hives lost 2 to an illness. I'll let her know its a nationwide problem. Thanks for informing us.

Canary in a coal mine... I had hoped that now with our new farm we could have our own hive, but since they range so far for their pollen, it wouldn't matter enough for the bees if we were organic if our neighbors aren't... poor bees! poor gardens! I wonder how MJ's hives are? What is nature without the happy humm of bees?

Sorry to hear about the bee losses some gals are having. (posted in the thread 4/15 about bee losses). I've noticed many more bumble bees in the yard this spring, but no honeybee sightings. Also 2 other kinds of bees or bee-imitators I have yet to identify. Hoping for the best.
