Sprouts! I planted my border lily bulbs 11 days ago and when I was weeding the flower bed yesterday afternoon I saw the starts of my plants coming up!! I got so excited I called DH at work to tell him. He was thrilled I did not expect them to pop up so fast. My rose bushes are also looking great, they all have nice sized leaves on them that are multiplying it seems like hourly. I am hoping that my canna and calla lilies pop up soon. I still have 50 glads to plant somewhere, not sure where yet as there is not enough room in my front garden. I also have 10 more red border lilies to get in, I am thinking of putting them in some long low planters so I can move them around and even take them when we move. The girls and I planted petunia seeds yesterday in some planters, if they come up I have another packet to plant, again may have to use all planters as I do not have enough room in the ground! I have put so much time planning into my flowers and we are moving this summer/fall so I only get one season out of them, but they will all keep coming back bigger and more beautiful every year, if the new owner lets them. ~Liz |

Liz, did you plant during the Christmas warm up? I'm curious to see how the bulbs fared that were planted by the Midwestern farm girls during the unseasonably warm December beginning of January we had. It's raining a lot here southwest of Chicago. Everything is sprouting and budding up too. I can't wait for the spring blooms!

I didn't plant my border lilies or canna bulbs until March 9th. My border lilies are gowing so fast I am surprised everytime I go outside. I am still waiting for the cannas and my 'inherited' calla lilies to pop up. The calla lilies were here when we moved and last spring the had doubled over the winter with no help from me so I am quite curious to see what I get this Spring as I did nothing but trim them back when the leaves browned in late Fall. My rose bushes got some very rude treatment this week from the house painters who paid no attention to my growing plants (in the fenced flower bed) and ended up reducing my bush with the most leaves out and big sprouts to about 1/3 of what it had been before they carelessly trod through my garden :( I was pretty steamed after they left and I went to inspect my plants. But as DH says it is early Spring and they should bounce back. At least they didn't crush any of my border lily sprouts, I'm not sure how well they would have mended. The girls and I also planted petunia seeds that they are very impatient about seeing sprout in the little containers we used, I am hoping the come up quickly while the girls are still interested ;) |

Sorry to hear your roses took a beating. Your husband is right though, they'll bounce back. Years ago I had some very careless house painters do a number on my plants. They also splattered paint everywhere. On their last day at the house, the one guy fell off the ladder & landed right in the middle of my biggest rose bush. He was so scratched up, it looked like someone had used a razor blade on his arms. I felt bad he got hurt, but I have to admit it helped me get over my anger about the mess they left me. |

The only thing I saw popping up here are the HOSTAS. We don't pop here as soon as most places. NANCY JO
