Linda -- I have a fold-up table that folds out to about 3 ft by 5 ft; it's a JoAnn's cheapo one that DH modified slightly. I lay backing, batting, and top on it and pin it with 2" safety pins. when I have what's showing pinned I carefully scoot it over to pin the rest. It's kind of a challenge with larger quilts. I used to lay everything the floor and hand baste but the floor has gotten too far away and pinning is faster than basting.
Grace -- Too cool! it looks great and your modifications make it look way better than the original. Congratulations on not having a UFO. Maybe I'll send you some more....

Cute Grace!
Judith, that is how I baste my quilts, with the pins.

I have that same table - not hubbie modified. LOL!
When I have tried to pin that way I always get lumps/bubbles/etc on the back. How do you make sure it is flat?

Linda --I have some little spring loaded clamps I got at Orchard Supply or maybe Lowes. It was a while ago. I line up backing on one corner of the table and clamp it down on all 4 corners and middle of the long sides. Then I spread the batting over; lining up on the same corner and smooth everything out good and scoot it over the edge abut 2 inches tops and bottom, and clamp again. Spread the top over it all (leaving the extra 2 inches outside the top) and clamp it all down again. Pin, starting in the center and working your way out. Most my quilts are bigger than the table so when I have everything on the table top pinned I unclamp and carefully scoot everything over so unpinned parts are on the table. You should keep smoothing it out as you go from center to edge. When I'm in the process of scooting I will sometimes peek under it all to see if there are any wrinkles. It works pretty well but sometimes you will get wrinkles no matter what. Having a busy print backing helps camouflage a multitude of errors :-)

Grace: That turned out so cute. I usually try to get all my Christmas gifts done by September. NOT going to happen this year as I have not even started. To many personal dodo going on right now and Christmas may not even happen in my home this year.

Judith, I still do the floor. Trying to get another king size quilt sandwiched and base stitched right now. Spent a couple of hours on the floor yesterday and still don't have the base stitch done. LOL My DH called me from work to make sure I made it off the floor. (sinker). He did say he would help me get it more straight this week so I guess I can forgive him. (smile). Sometimes I wonder when I am going to admit that I DO NOT need to be on the floor anymore!

Theresa -- I did floor until a back injury about 10 years ago. We have a little house so doing a big quilt on the living room floor was a wall-to-wall thing with lots of kitty help. At least doing it on the table means less help from the cats, altho there is one who will jump up there; I guess he hasn't got stuck by a pin yet.

Judith, I hear ya, My cats think they are the supervisors of everything. Unless I can lock them out of a room they are right there to have input! Here is a picture of the bosses of this house

If I lock them out they drive me crazy trying to get in. One solution that has worked well was installing a screen door to the sewing room. That way they can see in and not worry about me so much. I refuse to put a screen door to the bathroom :-)

My cat follows me into the bathroom because he knows I will be stationary for a while and can get some scratches.

Judith, we call ours the bathroom attendants LOL One of ours has taught herself to use the toilet instead of the box to pee. It's hysterical!
Linda, they just want to make sure you are using the litter box correctly! LOL
Jean, Thelma and Louise are so sweet!
Denise, Well, I don't know about cute. Their nickname is "The Twisted Sisters". They are spoiled and rotten to the core. But we love them.
