Ordered a bunch of berry plants today from Stark's.
So ..I'm really looking forward to creating a raspberry bed and strawberry bed and thornless blackberry beds.Then I got some patio blueberry plants..the kind that can be potted up/low growing mini versions. yay!
I wanted to be able to grow my own berries as they can be so expensive at the grocery.
Anyone here grow raspberries? and such?
Any tips?

I'm waiting for raspberry plants myself. Orderd 5 of 2 varieties from Johonny's Select Seed...or however you say it. This will be a first for these. We already have thornless blackberries. They have done well, but could be better, as they were weed whacked accidently 2 times.
Can't wait! |

have never grown the raspberries or the thornless blackberries, so I'm really looking forward to giving everything a try.
The raspberries are the Heritage Everbearing, and I got the Chester Thornless blackberries..I really hope they'll do well....
And then I got some of the Ozark Strawberries.
I'm really hoping that everything will grow well. The raspberries are supposed to produce the first year...so I may get at least a small batch of berries the first year from those...We shall see.
I have to get the beds ready for everything and create a strawberry bed too.
I have an area that already has a lawn sprinkler in it where some old roses used to be..I'll be clearing that out and upgrading the soil to get it ready for the raspberries.Then I have to create a bed for the strawberries and a small one for the blackberries.
Anyhow..I'm looking forward to growing these things.

| My sis and I are splitting an order of Red and Gold Raspberries and thornless Boysenberries. Hopefully we'll get a small crop this summer. They were $4.99 for a small container at the market and $6.99 at the organic market. Cheaper to buy the plant. |

that's exactly what I thought Jennifer..but in my case..cheaper to buy a whole orchard...especially when there is a family of 5 here..ha.:0)

I planted 75 strawberries, 12 blackberry and raspberry plants last year.....had a few berries....this year will be the fun one. I'm hoping for a good yield. We have 5 old blueberry bushes that had a great yield last year, so I ordered 100 more bushes to plant this year....I think Bee Haven is going to be a blueberry farm if all goes well. Love those anti-oxidants!

Shelle..you can always start with a few plants from a local nursery..go for it!

Oh Yummie!!
On the farm I lived on a a little girl we had forty blueberry bushes and a huge grape arbor and two..or was it four...strawberry pyramids and a bunch of raspberries. My grandmother would buy bosenberries frozen in bulk and we would have frozen berries over grandmas homemade buttered bread or zwiebak drizzled with frozen apple juice concentrate and canned milk or frozen bananas whipped up with frozen berries and fresh cream with just a pinch of sugar...... I miss those days! I cant wait to grow berries and join in with you all!! I hope you all have a wonderful harvest!!! Yumie!

Hope this makes you laugh...
I covet my neighbor's raspberries. They make the best (tasting) fence. A friend gave me some starts so I could extend the fence, but I didn't water them enough and they don't look as great as my neighbor's. One day, after making raspberry wine, I decided to take all the seeds and dump them at the edge of a flower bed for the birds to eat. I laughed as I decided exactly where to put them in case they sprouted. I've never heard of anyone growing them from seed, always from starts. Sure enough, I was weeding the next spring and the darn things had sprouted right where I dumped them!
Not only do I have my own berries now, but the birds (I suspect the quail) also brought blackberries and oregon grape with them into my flowerbed. They all came up volunteer, and are a happy surprize. Funny what rewards you reap (or pick) when thinking of others (I'm sure wildlife counts as "others").

| hmmmmmm i often think of this too whenever I dump blackberry squeezin's from my jelly making. The chickens eat most of it so I guess that's why I haven't seen any sprouts. Same might be from the wild birds stopping through too. |
