Hello Everyone!
I am a new member and I would like to say hello!! I just got back from Paris and I found the gardening out there to be a bit
addictive. I had no idea that this site existed until one of my French friends (who grows her crop on top of her apartment complex high on the roof-tops of Paris! Quelle Belle Vie!)told me to subscribe. SO- here I am and I am very excited to share information and stories with people who love the land and working it as much as I do!
I love to grow my own food and cook with it (I have this obsession with cooking fresh and flavorful Country French meals)...My mother and I have been growing fresh herbs, tomatoes, pumpkins and other crops out back for about 12 years.
We recently moved to an apartment due to the fact that my brother and I went off to college. I was wondering if any of you could offer suggestions for potted plants indoors (and outdoors we have a patio) that would add both color and a fresh scent to our new abode.

Hello Ally,
Welcome back to the U.S.! As soon as I saw Paris on the screen I had to see who it was. My daughter and I were there for a day but spent about a week in a small village in southern France(near Avignon and Uzes).Loved the countryside! A friend of mine is living there for about 10 months. I just e-mailed her that I found this tremendous site! How did your Paris friend find out about MJFarms? My friend when she moves back - happens to live in Idaho! What luck - she'll be able to actually visit the farm if she likes.

Hi Ally,
I went to college in spokane with a girl with that name. This is only the second time I have seen it. Welcome. Try some of those lovely miniature rose bushes. You can often find them in the flower department of most grocery stores. They are pretty and some are fragrant too.

Hello!
I am also new and when I read your post I had a few ideas for you!
It is really easy to grow tomatoes in pots on a patio, along with any variety of herbs including mints, lavendars, basil ect. Also consider growing pots of carrots, onions, even garlic does great. Try to stay away from things like Corn that need a larger root base, but try everything else. Even adding in things like squash or watermelons can happen if you buy the right varieties.
Another thing to consider is having lots of potted flowers...these brighten up any small space and can attract butterflies and humming birds :)
Good luck with your new apartment garden...I will be starting mine in a week or so also!

Thank You! I am looking into the minature rose bushes (so many colors) and we just have to figure out how to keep the birds and the squirrels off our tomatoes!! (Not to mention the racoons!)

you can buy some wire mesh cages to protect your plants from wildlife :) these are pretty good usually. Good luck with the mini roses!

| Try growing your pumpkins in one of those little kiddie pools, it works for a patio! You can even paint it to make it a pretty plant container, not just pumpkins need to grow in this of course! |

Hi,
Welcome back to the states. I spent some time in Paris and traveled a good bit around France..I've had grat luck with lavendar and rosemary in pots...the scents of the two will take you back to your travels. Recently, I tried chamomile in a pot and placed it in a shady area..it's doing great. |

My apologies if I am repeating anythign you already read. I think I read through all the responses.
You can grow tomatoes, melons, cucumbers in pots, just provide a trellis for them to climb up instead of sprawl around sideways like they might in a longer yard garden. I grew up in apartments and we always had tomatoes, lettuce, green beans (bush), and carrots in pots. Cook's Garden, I think they are on the web, sells purple carrots! The leaves on top are slightly tinged a purple on the edges. (Just tried them in the garden this year, and in pots for my sons, because my 2 1/2 year old loves the color purple.)
For colorful delicious planting, lettuces are nicely aranged with marigolds. We eat the marigold flowers.
Also nice, lavender, and you can use some of the leaves in a bowl of sugar at a holiday to "infuse" the sugar with a lavendar scent and a light flavor.
