I'm so glad I found this website - - I didn't know so many other women shared my interest in farmlife. We just bought five acres of legally zoned farmland that comes with a barn, so I'm pretty excited. I'm a stay-at-home mom and former political public relations professional, but I have always wanted to be a farmer. Every time I put on those horrible pantyhose I wish I was putting on overalls! :) My husband isn't a farmer either, but I have a dream of making a living farming some day.
My interests are cooking, baking, gardening, cross stitching and crafts. I'm not very good at sewing (skill level is only at shower curtain and pillows) but would like to improve. I'm crazy for herbs and dry them in my kitchen each year for the winter. I want to learn how to can so badly, and this summer my husband and I are going to try our hands at canning tomatoes. Don't have a big garden this year because we might (hopefully) sell the house this summer, but next year I will have five acres to start working!
Anyway, that's a little about me, and I can't wait to get to know all of you!

Hi Laura, Welcome! Virginia is so beautiful, we used to live in Northern VA, in Leesburg, and Winchester. It's a toss-up for us if we want to retire there or stay here in Wisconsin (which we love just as much). Glad you joined the group, looking forward to getting to know you!

Welcome Laura...I would love to see Virginnia some day..my favorite cousin moved there a couple years ago..and I miss her ..she loves it there. You sound so fun..you will fit right in here..we are more overalls than pantyhose for the most part!!!

| Kim, where in Virginia are you visiting? We live in a lake community called Smith Mountain Lake - - it's where "What About Bob" was filmed. I love the water, country and mountains, so it's the perfect place for me. |

| Thanks for all the warm greetings! You girls all sound fun too. It's nice to meet other people who get satisfaction out of the same things I do. I get such a big kick out of little things, like a new bloom in my garden, finding a fun new recipe, etc . . . . it doesn't take much to make me happy, and actually I know some of my friends think I am silly to get so excited about such things, but who cares! |

Laura - Canning tomatoes is a good place to start to learn how to put up veggies. Scalding and peeling them is fairly easy, and you just place the cut up pieces into a sterilized jar with a little salt, using new lids to secure them and boil them submerged for 30-45 minutes. For safety, please read some detailed instructions and do not use my very simple ones when you begin. But you will find them easy to do and they make spaghetti sauces and many other dishes taste great. I am down to my last jar from last year's tomato crop and now I have new tomatoes coming in the garden, so it will be canning time again soon!

Thanks for advice about canning tomatoes. I have three plants with tomatoes on them already! They are little and green, but still . . . :)
I have all clay soil. It's a pain! |

Yes, we have a lot of red clay in our soil, too, and also a lot of sand. Lots of compost and manure needed here!

Hi Laura! I am from Blacksburg - down in Montgomery County, southwest of Roanoke. In the mountains, too. Isn't it just so beautiful here? We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful area of the nation. We don't have land yet, although we do have a pretty good sized backyard. But we do grow some vegetables in pots on the deck, and we do have an apple tree (it is amazing how much it has grown since we first moved here 15 years ago) and a plum tree (same thing). We planted the plum tree for our daughter, and it was just a stick - now it is HUGE! Damson plums! Yummy! Our dogs even like them, when they fall off of the tree.
I am so glad to have "stumbled" across MJF - although I think I had a little "angelic" help - I think I was meant to find her. Because I have done nothing but GO like crazy - I'm baking bread, making good meals, stitching, knitting, and all sorts of homey things. And it just feels so good and so RIGHT.
How close are you to Blacksburg? I'm not exactly sure where Moneta is.
