Today I went to the Akin's Natural Foods store and I came out with about $90 worth of stuff. And I was sticking to a list for the .....most part. *sigh*

I got some liquid vitamin for my 7 mo old. I got some bedwetting tablets and some "Calm Child" for my 5 year old. I got some Flaxseed stuff ($7 bag) to sprinkle in our food. I got some "Tranquility" which has calcium & magnesium for sleeping deeper (for me). I got some dandruff shampoo for my 3 year old who has a big case of junk on her head. It's got sacylic acid and colloidal sulfur. I got my 8year old son some Kyo-Dophilus for his digestive system. I almost got him some other stuff too, but figured I would do the probiotic first and then try something else. He's got IBS. If you have any suggestions for him, please chime in. And I got some Rosemary Oil deodorant, chlorophyll tablets and a small crystal stick deodorant for me.

I wanted to get more stuff. I rarely go there, it's bad for the finances.

Rebecca,

Sounds like you had an interesting trip. Costly...but interesting. Ha. I don't think you were naughty at all. Sounds like sound purchases to me.

Let me know if the calcium & magnesium works for sleeping. I am a terrible sleeper and have tried everything from melatonin to ambien cr when I desperate.

Blessed are those who love the soil,

Patsy

My kids had some kind of "junk" on their head too. I tried everything, went to the doctor, he wasn't sure, he gave the one pills, but they weren't approved for the younger one (scary). Nothing worked until I tried good ol' tea tree oil mixed with almond oil, which helps it to soak under the skin. Just wanted to share my cure.

Shannon,
Yeah, the dandruff shampoo is fortified with MSM, Neem Oil, Tea Tree Oil and Rosemary. It's JASON Natural Cosmetics All Natural Hair & Scalp Therapy System. I don't know what MSM or Neem Oil is. It's a 12 Oz bottle and it was ten dollars.

Patsy,

I'll be glad to let you know. It also has Milk Protein Concentrate, Valerian and Chamomile. All very basic stuff.

The best thing for me when I can't sleep is to have my husband read to me. There is something about his voice. I drop off after he reads about a page or so.

Well, the "Tranquility" relaxed me quite a bit before bed. But, I still dreamed a bunch of weird stuff. I'm tired of dreaming. And I still wake up too early in the morning, before daylight. Even if I go to bed late.

Oh well.

Rebecca,
My husband limits how often I can go to the health food store...$90 is my baseline expendature! It is the one area where I am NOT frugal. The good news is, I have a very healthy family and we have only visted the doctor once in 3 years (my youngest shoved a purple bead up her nose and we had to get some help removing it).

Oh my gosh! We haven't been to the doctor, but we haven't been healthy. This year with the kids being in school, they have caught everything and then some.

What do you guys use? You probably eat healthy too. We used to, but I've just gotten so lazy. I'm trying to get better at it though.

Rebecca,
Since your kids attend a traditional school, they are bound to get sick more often than mine. We homeschool and therefore come into contact with far fewer bugs than average.

--Side note--We do not believe in immunisations. Currently, the local schools are having a huge problem with their immunised students getting Whooping Cough...HUMMMMMMMMM--

Back on topic...We usualy eat healthy, but recently have been cheating a bit. For immunity I rely on the healthy diet ( fermented veggies, and cultured milk products especialy) and use echinaca and colloidal silver when we actualy get a bug. We always seem to pass around a cold in October or November and then again in January or February, but it is nothing more than an inconvenience (I will NOT take a sniffly child ANYWHERE, I do not believe in sharing germs). Last spring we had chicken pox, but were actualy relieved to get them and get them over with.

Ok, I've rambled a bit. Hope atleast some of it was helpful.

Oh my. If I had to keep to home whenever my children had sniffles, I'd never leave! Well, I say that. Usually the older two will get sniffles about once a quarter and in Oklahoma it's just allergies. We just give them Claritan and go on.

Well, our kids just started an institutional school this fall. One in 2nd grade, one in kindergarten. They have caught everything and then some, but they didn't get it nearly as severe as the other children did.

Do you give your children vitamins? If so, what kind.

I'm for immunizations, but I don't understand some of the newer ones. I don't like medicine that is NEW. If it's old and tried and true I'm fine, but some of the newer immunizations get recalled after only a year or so. You'd think we would wait and see before having everyone get them. And DON'T get me started on the Human Pap immunization.

I think that some are fine, measles, mumps, rubella, diptheria. But, others are kind of too phobic for me. I don't seem why my children who aren't immuno-compromised should get some of them.

Oh well. I also won't bring my kids near the doctors office at all when it's flu season. I think there are more germs at the pediatrician than anywhere else on earth!

: ) Where do you get cultured milk products?

I give my chillin's vitamins off and on. Basicaly I buy them and then forget to dispense them (I forget to take mine as well). Overall, I believe that good nutrition is better than vitamins anyway, so I concentrate on that. We drink green tea with a mix of herbs (depending on the mood) and I am about to start us on some Syberian Ginsing in tea form. I find that much easier to remember. I need to get the girls and I back onto liquid calcium, but it all tastes like chalk...YUCK! I guess that is one area I should just buck up on...
