I picked up several long (to the floor)denim skirts at Fashion Bug on sale for $5-9 (What a steal!) and have taken to wearing them most of the time. Was just wondering if anyone else has the same reaction I have been getting from people lately...I've actually had several people ask me if I've become Amish, or apostolic. I wasn't trying to make a religious statement with this. They are just so comfy...I'm diabetic and on a insulin pump and the skirts don't "wear" on my injection sites like pants do. Just wonder if anyone else has come up against anything like this.

I do it from time to time. I love to wear skirts and denim jumpers and like that especially in summer. I am just not built for shorts (never felt comfortable in them anyhow) and feel cooler (temperature wize..heehee) in dresses..but I have had that same reaction..oh..why do you only wear dresses now???? Is it something with your religion???? funny huh?

I really like skirts and dresses in warmer weather. I used to wear them year round, especially in the autumn and winter with high heeled, knee high boots--great look for me, but our office has gone more casual, and I'm just not that interested in dressing up any more, especially when I can put on my flannel lined pants in this weather!!!!

I do sometimes wish I was a little more feminine, but I've found that I can be that too, in a gorgeous pair of wide leg dress pants (a la Kate Hepburn) with a tailored lacy blouse and pearls.

If you like the skirts you bought, and they're comfortable for you, wear them. Sounds like you can dress them up or down.

Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet.

Ashley, I am glad that you've found a new look that works for you! My sister is diabetic and wears the pump, she also has trouble with her sites. I can't convince her to give skirts a try so she runs around in jammie pants most of the time. A skirt is a great way to look lady like and still be causaly and practicaly dressed. (If you think about it, strangers probably treat you more respectfuly in a jean skirt than they do when you wear nice jeans.) As for people you know, it may take awhile for them to get use to it. When they ask, just remind them that long skirts ARE in style these days and you like them.

Unless I am elevated for some reason (like yesterday when I cleaned the chimney) I aleays wear long skirts. I wear them because they are modest and feminine, with the added bonus of they look great and are super comfortable. Durring last months cold spell, I layered a cotton twill skirt with 2 petticoats, bloomers, and tights and stayed warmer than hubby. When I first started wearing skirts, my mom and sister hassled me a lot, but they are pretty well useto it by now. Most of the women in my church wear only skirts (no, we are not Amish or apostolic) so it is pretty much the norm there. A few months ago, I begin wearing a cover (see www.maggiesveil.com) and I have been asked by a lady at the healthfood store if I was a Menonite (mom and sis are just rolling thier eyes at this one).

I love to wear long skirts. I have noticed that, contrary to several years ago when they were very fashionable, often I will be the only one at a store wearing one. I have wondered if that makes me look terribly out of style, and if people think I weaer them due to religious beliefs (which actually would not bother me one bit). But I do like to look half-way in style, and so I find myself wearing jeans more and more and less skirts. I miss the skirts!

I wore skirts all last summer and especially on our trip to Texas. In the 100+ degree heat, I felt very comfortable. I also am having a hard time finding comfortable jeans nowadays. Something about them just does not fit me right. I also like those knit gaucho pants for going out. They look dressy, are easy to care for and inexpensive.

I wear long skirts pretty much all the time. Except for today- I"m sick, and I"m in sweats. I started doing it when I was pregnant, because skirts with elastic waistbands stretch really well. They weren't even maternity skirts, just a size larger than I normally wear. (Unfortunately, those skirts still fit me! Wah!) I was able to wear the same clothes for all 9 months! :) It appealed to my frugal side. While I was pg, I did do some reading about modesty, and so that's a secondary reason for my skirts, as well as I think I simply look better in skirts than pants! (However, I still do spaghetti straps in the summer, so obviously, I'm not as modest about my top half- I'm working on it. :) I'm very inspired by old fashioned styles: Regency, Edwardian- and also by the patchy hippie look. Tasha-Rose has a picture of a skirt she made from a blanket on her blog, and I just LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I'm trying to find one that I like enough to do that with!

I just have one problem. In the winter, I need some non boot shoes that look decent with skirts, since obviously sneakers don't go, and I find I don't like the clog look either, with skirts- in the summer, sandals are great, but in the winter, too cold! I don't like heels, except for kitten heels on special occasions- so I haven't found a good shoe for my skirts yet.

Oh, and I think I have a really timeless sense of style. I like to look nice, but not trendy. I think I can do that in skirts. The only time I've found I can't wear them, is when I'm doing Pilates in public. Then I wear sweats, but as a reward for not missing a class, I intend to get myself some really nice yoga pants. I even wear them when I work out, just not Pilates. :)

Persephone,
I love that skirt, too!! I have an old patchwork quilt that I may be able to do something with.

Girls, one summer I wore dresses a lot because it was so hot. My boss asked one of the sales reps if I was pregnant!!! When he asked why, my boss said, "She's wearing dresses all the time." Ed said, "What do you expect, it's 100 degrees out!"

People are so quick to assume!!!

I wear skirts/dresses all summer and usually a majority of spring and going into fall. If my legs get chilly I wear knee socks, but when I have to start pulling on the wooly tights in winter, I'll usually wear trousers instead. I find skirts/dresses much comfier to wear most of the time. In summer when it's warm, a nice light linen skirt or cotton sundress is sooo nice. I don't worry about whether they are in fashion or not. I don't think I've ever been truly trendy, but I have my own vintage style that works for me. I'm not religious whatsoever, but I am modest and feminine because I think it better represents me as a person.
As for those folks that jump to conclusions about you based on what you wear- just be brave. I'm slowly getting there..

It makes one wonder though why, just because one wears a skirt/dress that isn't plunging or a mini, or wears a kerchief/scarf on her head that makes one pretty and feminine, people automatically jump to the idea that you are amish (or mennonite or mormon etc.)? I used to wear this pretty pink and white floral kerchief years ago (I thought very gidget in style) and I had people ask me if I was ukrainian.. ??!!??

I've been wearing only skirts and dresses for the past five or six years, so I'm pretty well used to it by now. I am not as conscious of standing out in a crowd anymore - except for the odd occasion when I am sitting behind my spinning wheel at an event, wearing what I now consider to be everyday clothes, and someone comments that I must be so hot in that "historic costume". I certainly don't mind. It's been my aim for as long as I can remember to appear as though I've stepped out of another time. I have never received any comments or questions regarding religion, but I have had people (mostly older ladies and gentlemen) approach me just to tell me that they like how I'm dressed. That's always nice.
It's wonderful to see so many skirt-clad farmgirls here! I have yet to find a farmgirl chore that I cannot accomplish in an ankle-length skirt, barring perhaps the painting of my cabin roof, for which I wore something calf-length. However, I have not tried cleaning my own chimney, as Trina has...

When the weather is warm, I really like wearing knee-length A-line skirts and summer dresses. But when it's cold-- I just can't bear it; there's nothing warmer (in my opinion) than a pair of pants and two sets of knee socks! I do have one red/black flannel plaid knee-length A-line skirt that I love and is great in cold weather. I'd love to find more, but I got this one at a thrift store for $3, and I haven't come across any others that are similar.

I love to wear long skirts! I have alot of the gauzy, cotton broomsticks skirts. I love those on summer days. I wear them with birkenstock sandals, or my chaco sandals....I would love to wear more skirts in the winter, but I need to dust off my sewing machine and make some, maybe after our move I will make myself some pretty, femine, *warm* skirts.

I have rheumatoid arthritis, and sometimes my hips and lower back really hurt, and I find that the waist band of jeans or heavier pants really hurt and pull. Since I don't like the look of knit pants, or anything tight ( I have the post-babyX4 body...nothing tragic, but I don't want anything to really point out the thighs and belly pooch!) I feel like a long, pretty skirt with a shirt, even a v-neck t-shirt is more flattering on me.

Hooray for farmgirls who love thier skirts!

Kate
ps...I really don't like dresses, infact, I only own 2, both from my sister's weddings...I just can't find a dress that fits me well...I must be two totally different "sizes" on top and bottom.

Valerie- I have that problem too. (My thighs are *juicy*. :) ) Some company (maybe Aveeno) has put out an over the counter cream/lotion that goes where your thighs rub and its supposed to act like a powder to keep them from chafing. I haven't tried it, but I want to. Look for it in the lotion section, or ask the pharmacist. Maybe they'll know.

Oh- I recently bought a 70s patternon ebay for wrap pants... pants that are only two pieces and tie around the front and the back... very simple to make and very comfy. I think I'll make them for this summer, they're sort of skirt-like (so it counts in this thread, right?). If anyone would like a link to a similar pattern, let me know.

This doesn't solve the thigh problem, but the cold problem. I just got some tights from the dollar store to go with a skirt that I just got. Love the tights!!!!! I've even worn them under jeans when we were going to shovel at a friend's house. I've been looking for more skirts to wear. Funny that this topic came up. I've been looking for more skirts to wear.

Valerie,
It's always fun to wear a cute pair of bloomers/pantalettes under a skirt - especially if they have lace trim that peeks out beneath your skirt hem.
You can go to http://www.bloomers4u.com to see some examples. There are also sewing patterns available - the Edwardian Underthings at http://www.folkwear.com/romantic.html for example.

Ah, ye olde thigh rub. Yes, I have that issue too. I put baby powder between my legs, and it takes care of it, but if you're out walking around on a really hot day (like me in the summer at renfests), you'll have to reapply. Or just stand in front of a fan spread eagle, and let your thighs dry out. Cause what causes it isn't that your thighs are big, it's that they're MOIST and big. If they're dry, they don't chafe.

I LOVE my broomstick skirts. We have an Indian store in our mall, and I get mine from there.

I also don't wear dresses that much, because I also feel that they don't fit me all that well, and I don't normally like the dresses I see in the stores- they don't usually have pretty A-line ankle length dresses that don't look frumpy. However, Majamas, a nursing clothing company has this REALLY great dress I want: http://www.majamas.com/06_spg_lg/06_2152_htide_lg.jpg It's perfect for my style. And if you live in Australia, this site has really nice dresses too, though pricey, but dreaming doesn't cost anything! :)http://www.chrysalis-clothing.com/product.aspx?id=2

Valerie,
JC Penney catalog (and also Lane Bryant) carry something like that is like bloomers or long shorts called petti pants (in JCP page 212 Spring catalog)that are great for under a skirt to eliminate thigh rub.I wear them all summer long like underwear, and they work great and are very cool. I just get them a little larger than I wear usually.

I wear skirts probaly 95% of the time. In the garden I mostly wear overalls, but on occassion I wear a skirt. Today I wore jeans because of a lot of heavy lifting today helping Rob put in the new sink (A NEW-PORCELINE-SINK!!!!) and we were hauling my new dresser up the very steep farmhouse stairs in our house, etc. so I didn't want to hassle with making sure my skirt was hitched up so I wouldn't trip. Some days it just works out better that way. Most days, however, you find me in a log skirt...even in the Winter. i just wear warm tights, wool socks and a petticoat if I will be going out-of-doors that day.

I think it is funny when I go places I get funny looks sometimes and I am not sure if it is the fact that I am in a long skirt, because the skirt is generally a patchy skirt, or because I tend to walk around happy looking....I get a lot of stares nonetheless. It's especially funny when it is the tourists that don't know me-like a lot of people in town do- I think they think I am a Fundementalist Christian....if they only knew *snicker, snicker*

For me it all comes down to the fact that while I can drive a tractor like the best of them, I am a girlie girl...and I can drive that tractor in a skirt!

You know, I always wore skirts- summer, spring, fall, it didn't matter. Then for some reason, this winter, I decided to start wearing pants. And I kind of like them! :) Probably because I don't have to shave my legs as often! But, in the summer, I will go back to skirts. So much cooler and easier to deal with.

I wear mostly skirts at home in the summertime.
I can't wear dresses. I am so short waisted I haven't found a dress that looks good on me.
I love to wear skirts. I love jean skirts if they fit right.
I make my skirts I wear at home out of 100% cotton.
I usually will get a dark color that you can't see through.
I need to make some new ones for this summer.
They usually are very in expensive to make to and look good with a cute T-shirt. pinkroses
