Last Wednesday I went out to the laundry room to put the last load of the day in the dryer and I heard the unmistakably sound of running water. Luckily at 8:00pm it had just started and we got the water turned off in that zone. What has ensued since then is complete gutting of this area of the laundry room due to age, decay and neccessity. I am still without washer hook up as dh has been committed to other activities in the evening and had a scout trip last weekend. We hope to get everything up and running in the next day or two...but I was in shock at the laundromat...2.50 a wash load...Yikes! Can't afford that for long! So ladies check your pipes and insulate, or you'll end up like us...

| We had frozen pipes last Monday (when our lows that night, with windchill, were 40 below zero). We awoke to no hot running water and after hours of trying to unthaw them ourselves we called a plumber. I'm wondering what the bill will be (UGH!) but am thankful it was just frozen pipes and that none of them burst! We had been keeping the cabinet doors open but will now let the faucets drip at night on the coldest nights! |

So far I have not had frozen water pipes but have had the plumber here 3 times since last Monday to steam my septic lines. This is the first time in 13 years we have lived here that we have had a problem. I guess I'm not alone though, we have been pretty much below zero for going on 3 weeks now, and have little to no snow cover. I was told that my drain field is now frozen, and I don't expect to see that thaw til sometime in May. I hate the thought of having to have the septic pumped every few weeks til then as it's $80 each time.

My husband is worried about his mother's house about an hour from here, she is in Florida and although his brother checks the house about every other day, no one is running the water there. It was -18 this morning here and that was NOT the wind chill factor.
I told him to put some heat tapes on the pipes where they are in the unheated garage - like I used to have to do years and years ago when I had a mobile home for a while. They don't use a lot of power, they only come on when the temperature goes below freezing, and a little money for electricity is a lot less expensive than a big repair bill or insurance hassle....

| Yikes, bad news, bramble (and ladies). So sorry. In Norfolk I have not yet had a burst pipe and we always let water trickle when the forecast is for loooowww temps. Also, the spigot for the garden hose gets wrapped in bubble wrap too, for extra protection. Stay warm, spring's a coming. Nance |
