Our dryer broke down and I can't bring myself to spend the money to get it fixed. I have been just fine hanging the clothes on a clothes rack by the fire place. But I hate when the towels are crunchy. Do any of you know what to do so line tried towels aren't so stiff? If I can figure this out maybe I won't use a dryer anymore. It's got to be better for the enviroment.

I have been hanging towels outside on the line and they are nice and soft.

Do you think your washing machine is getting all the soap rinsed out before the spin cycle? That could be a culprit.

oh oh oh...what kind of soap are you using? do you have an extra rinse cycle setting at all? I know it is a little wasteful, but if you use the cold water only, it's a little better.

I always get crunchy towels too! I ONLY use cold water and very little soap so I know that neither of those issues are my problem. Any other suggestions?

It's always happened to me even when I had a different washer. This one is a new front loader one. I use cold water and the high efficiency tide you're supposed to use with this washer. I'll try an extra rinse. I'm glad to hear there is hope.

I tend to like crunchy towels so I won't be much help..but if you give them a good snap when you hang them up and again when you take them off the line it does help.

When I hang my towels up they get crunchy too. You actually get used to it and find that they dry you off better...they seem to absorb more water for some reason. But, if you really, really, really dislike the crunchy feel you could try adding a little fabric softener to your rinse cycle or a little white vinegar. Snapping them, like Aunt Jenny said works well too. We use the dryer in the winter and the clothesline all summer. It takes a little getting used to the crunchy towels in spring, and it takes getting a little used to the soft towels in winter! :o)

Shannon,
Could you still use the dryer with no heat?
My mother used to throw towels in on air only just to fluff before she hung up or out to dry
seemed to help.

I too like the towels 'crunchy'. They seem to make me feel better as I dry off. MB

I HATE crunchy towels!!!!!! (although they DO dry you off better!)

I just got a new stack washer and dryer after being without for 8 months! I am one happy lady!
We were hanging clothes on the line during the summer and then in front of the furnace since the weather got crappy...I will go back to hanging *some* clothes on the line when it gets nicer outside, but not my towels...

As a small tip, using some fabric softener in the washer seems to help a bit.

My towels are crunchy and I love them that way! Nothing better than drying off with a crunchy line dried towel! Try some white vinegar in the rinse -- that may help.

I don't think I can add much to what everyone else has said! I love crunchy towels myself, but my family does not. When I hang my towels out I leave them until they are just damp, and then pop them in the dryer for a little low-heat fluffing. Maybe if you try rubbing them together a bit before you fold them up it will soften them up.

I hang clothes outside when I can. A stiff breeze helps. But in winter time, we heat with a wood stove, in the basement. So the clothes get hung up down there. I have not found anything that will make them softer. The only thing I noticed, I started using some new towels, and they stayed soft. So it must be as they get older they get stiffer! Sounds funny! Spring is coming Good luck Michele

Thanks girls, I did a load last night. I used fabric softener, an extra rinse, vinegar and shook and snapped many times. I am happy to say they are much better, still a little crunchy, but I can live with it. Maybe I will even learn to like it. Thanks again, Shannon

Hey Shannon...as with baby diapers, using fabric softener on your towels will reduce their soaking ability...just thought to mention....maybe skipping the fabric softener just to extend the life of your towels.

I've heard that too. Both liquid and dryer sheets.
