What was the name of that female icon during WWII who used to represent women who took over "male" oriented jobs during the war? I'm a bit of a tomboy and always thought she was so cool. Would like to read more about the history of her, who created her etc.

I have two great aunts that where Rosie the Riverters. One is in heaven for two years now. It was fun to hear at her funeral how all the men that where still working would come and watch her and compeat against her and she would win. They where in awe of how fast she was at her job.

| My grandmother was a Rosie :-) When she moved out of her house a few years ago to live with my uncle, my husband and I helped her with some cleaning out and packing. Hubby came across her old Rosie toolbox (still with some of the old tools in it) and she gave it to him (he's a real handyman-type)! He absolutely treasures that old box, and I think it's just the sweetest thing! :-) |

My Great Grandmother was a "Rosie" too. She went to work in an aircraft factory. The first day the foreman told her she couldn't wear a dress to work, she had to wear pants. She cried about it for two days, and on the third she went to work. She was very tiny, with teeny tiny fingers. She would look through the factory sweepings and pick out any dropped nuts and sort them back into their proper sizes to be used again.

My mom worked in a Defense Plant, in the old Edison laboratory in New Jersey. She was so proud. Her mother joined the WACs and became a lab technician somewhere down south.
I love this poster, vamped up for today's protests (name your cause -- it's all good!)

The only thing I think was 'vamped up' for the poster is the addition of the flag. It was originally on a yellow background. My mom was a riveter at a defense plant in California and put together airplane wings. She said that the women had to step up for the jobs the men had been doing. Most of them were stay at home moms who wore dresses and pearls before the war. The posters were to encourage women to be strong and confident. I love this poster too and, for me, never looked at it as promoting a topic of protest - must be a more current trend. I can do a lot of things that some men can't because my mom encouraged me to try. I think you'll be impressed when you learn more about what women did to keep this country on its feet when they were needed and the number of years that they had to keep this going. It certainly seems like this was the beginning of women's independence.

So neat! Thank you all for sharing your stories! My family were in China as missionaries at the time and my Great Grandfather and great uncle ( and others in my family) were held as POWs by the Japanese during that time. My grandfather worked on Subs, but I have no idea what my grandmother did..now I will have to ask her!! Once again thank you for sharing!
