2nd landing almost done and now onto the last landing that spans 3/4 of the length of the house. I'm stumped. I don't have the time to do the harlequin pattern with the diamonds and thought one solid color to wrap things up. Any suggestions? I have the walls painted a very light Ritz cracker color---the banister that runs the length of the open staircase is a very light cocoa chocolate color. What about this color??
LAFAYETTE GREEN "A rich, deep green-painted floor will always be reminiscent of good traditional architecture — everything from Georgian shutters to the green floorcloth in the entrance hall of Monticello. It's a no-brainer for a porch floor, because it has a natural connection to the outside. And this dark forest green sits down. It doesn't jump out at you." -
Colors: Background Antiqued Lace and the diamonds are a deep almost currant color---had to bring it back to have it darkened as it was waaaaay to pinky for the stairs.
BEFORE-I'm embarrassed to even show this--my poor sad floors . We managed to take care of the downstairs wood floors right away , but time has a way of slipping away and before you know it ----it's been 20 years!
ALMOST AFTER:
This was a LOT harder than I thought it would be. Have to clean up the 'edges' do a little distressing and then seal it with a nice satin poly for durability.
On to the NEXT corner landing!!!

Dutch Boy Chalk paint....very thin coats-I diluted the paint 1-part water 1-part paint and did several coats. It's taken forever to dry--it's been really humid this past week.
Thanks so much for the high praise!

Nothing like a little powder and rouge to bring it around huh? I wish I would have done this YEARS ago. But, just the thought of painting over hardwood gave me shivers...it was looking pretty bad on the landings so I had to do something. |

Wow! I never would've guessed chalk paint! COOL! Melody, will you also be applying some type of sealer? The only reason I'm asking is that we have painted some of our floors in the past. Our floors are in very bad shape, so about ten years ago or so we painted them with deck paint, which was a recommendation by one of those home improvement shows on television. I just love the look of painted floors, but I am really not happy with how poorly the deck paint held up to wear and tear. Well, maybe that's unfair. They're very old floors, not in good condition at all, so I guess I shouldn't be so "hard" on them! LOL! Sorry... Anyhow, we're not in a position to replace the floors. We have a couple of lovely wool carpets with which I am unwilling to part, so painting the wood again just makes sense (or we could install inexpensive wall-to-wall carpeting to go underneath our rugs, of course). I don't think I would go fancy like you have, but I sure am interested in what you're doing! Again - AWESOME job! Hugs - Nini

I'll seal it with several coats of water based Polyurethane---Satin based. I have every confidence that it will hold up--depends on how many coats of poly I apply.
These floors are original to the house which was built in 1894. Pretty old huh? I feel so much better seeing how well this little portion turned out and now I have the confidence of proceeding with the rest of the upstairs.

Sara....The pictures and paintings go ALL the way up the stairs--I must have at least 60 of all sorts, shapes, and sizes including original framed kindergarten art! It started out a blank canvas and now it really adds a colorful dimension to the open staircase and landings. Pain to dust though! |

I hang pictures the same way. I have a theory that if you hang pictures at different levels or distance apart then you can add or remove pictures without having to redo the whole wall. I have hung empty frames to fill in spaces waiting for the right picture to come along.
