I am about to turn 42 this month and I can say my 40's have been the most reflective decade yet!
Someone in my college class asked me some real life adult advice- as in how to get from A to Z and survive. I had to think about this for awhile and here is what I said:
1. Live simple- you don't need stuff to get your through life. Put 10% of what you make away for a rainy day and try to find ways to save money but also live life. Example: Walk instead of drive, when you can, eat a healthy diet that can be bought at the farmer's market, by used and don't worry about trends. In 10 years, you will see the fruits of your labor.
While most of my friends were out pursuing the bigger and more is better lifestyle, I kept it real and simple. There is nothing wrong with success or wants but really think about the personal time and costs you have to put in to get it. Simplify and live a bigger life!!!
2. Take on adventure when it comes. Refer to #1 so you have the time and space to do so.
3. Do what you love and you will find a way to get paid. It took me 20 years to come back around to my artistic, creative, ways. I took a long detoured that cost me my health, well being and energy. I was told I could not survive living working in an art gallery, being a hostess or working in my favorite clothing store (which I was doing at the same time, at 18) I had it together at 19 but let my parents and friend influence me to think I was a failure. I also didn't have the confidence to defy in a good way. I was not a bad kid EVER but I was made to feel so. Guard that heart and Go against society standards, don't buy into it, you will be ok.
4. Don't be afraid of change- whether it's personally, emotionally, financially, even with friends and family or how you decorate your home. Change is good!!! Always make space for something new- not in the materialist sense but in the life sense. You can't move forward clinging to your past.
What would y'all add?
Edited to add the gal is 23 and wants to be a kindergarten teacher. She has no desire for anything more. She loves to crochet and do crafts but she wants to stay living in her 1 bedroom apartment forever. She has no desire for stuff but she says the pressure is enormous right now- mostly family or friends who are starting to marry and have children. She has no problem being defined as the crazy, single cat lady...which made me laugh!!! :) |

Thanks Sara and yes she does!! We have bonded over a few classes we have had together and our love of animal rescue. She has a very similar story to mine, in that, her family does not support her choices AT ALL. I hear what her family says to her and it reflects EXACTLY how my family is. I am trying to help her without telling her how. LOL That is the tough part!!!
She could have gotten student housing for free but didn't want the typical college lifestyle of partying, drinking, etc. So she works 35 hours a week at a local pet store. I ran into her at the farmer's market too. She is so me...20 years ago..but with so much more confidence. I just want to help her along..a little..because the journey is always hers!!!
