Is there a hard and fast rule regarding kitchen curtains? I have never been good at window treatments.
I won at auction 6 panels of Ralph Lauren Edgefield Check hand made out of new sheets-with each panel measuring 42-wide x 92 long (includes a 2 inch top edge)
Dark brown-Olive Green and Denim blue "Houndstooth" pattern.
My cupboards are a deep slate gray with several pieces (free standing cabinet (32 drawers!) in a shades of pewter. My kitchen walls are white (painted over textured raised wallpaper.
All neutral, but I thought what the heck a patterned curtain might be nice-I've always had your standard white curtains.
My windows are very big and long (we took out the old weighted windows and bought 'inserts' to fit the original window size many years ago.
What do you think? Is there a hard and fast rule regarding kitchen curtain protocol?

Melody, the only steadfast rule I follow in my kitchen or anywhere else in the house is "do I like it" and if I do I will find a way to make it work for me.
Years ago I took several day long decorating classes. One of the things I learned was to take a color you like out of a print/pattern and use that color someplace else in the room.
I like your curtains and I think you will have fun seeing where they take you. One thing is for sure since you are used to white curtains you will have a totally new look in your kitchen.
Edited to say "new curtains are like dying your hair - if you don't like it - it isn't permeant and didn't cost much so you can change them".

My way of decorating is if I like it and enjoy the look who cares what the rules are. Sometimes we can to hung up on rules. I used to and one day decided to give myself some freedom. Not only with decorating, but with all my sewing and crafts. It sure has made projects more fun and relaxing. If you like your new fabric for curtains, go for it. It looks like it will be Great curtain fabric.

Your fabric is just beautiful! I can't wait to see a photo! I try to color match my things, but mostly, I just decorate however makes me feel the happiest when I look at it. No matter how wonderful my decorating may be to some or to just me, there is always going to be someone who has different tastes. Be Happy!!

Funny story: Several years ago I went a little too artistic with my small plain kitchen. My oldest daughter dropped by-walked into the kitchen-stared and said very quietly--"Mom are you on medication?" I still laugh about that!!

Mine are two panels of flowery fabric that I finished the edges on, and just have them on a tension rod over the sink. I hope there are not any rules because I definitely made it up as I went. :)

Yup, the criteria is "do you like it"!
I don't have curtains on any of my windows except the bathroom one. Only have valances on the two in the bedroom. We have really nice Crystal pleat blinds in all of our windows which are trimmed with oak trim. I decided when we had to rebuild our house that I didn't need or want to do curtains. The only reason I have one in the bathroom, which is sheer is to kind of block the view of all my hubby's junk in the back yard . . :D
So, go with what you like!

We just did the entire dining room/great room in faux wood blinds---after we returned from Nashville. The living room was done in faux wood blinds several years ago. No valance. I think if I could I'd put the whole house in blinds.
I just never got a handle on window treatments-my achille's heel!
Thanks ladies for all the advice--I'll let you know how the curtains turn out....

I agree with the other farmgirls. Just do what you like and what you think will look best. Currently only my kitchen and bedroom have curtains. The rest have blinds. Since my kitchen has dark cabinets and black counter tops I choose to use a bright lime green as my curtains to add a pop of color to my kitchen. Not a popular choice for others but it works for me and I love it! Hope it works out for you!
