Does anyone here go to a naturopath? This is a form of medicine I don't know much about but my parents and some close family friends of mine go to one and it sounds like such an interesting alternative to a "normal" doctor. It seems that the naturopath has a vast education beyond a regular medical degree that allows them to seek more natural cures and paths for medical conditions. The unfortunate thing is they aren't covered under most insurance policies so it's generally an out of the pocket expense at this time.

We go up in Bemidji. He has a long client list so it is hard to get in and in two years we ahve only been three times. I practice a lot of preventative naturopathy at home, so that helps ease the expense.

Hi Liz,
I don't go to a naturopath, but go to two different D.O.s; Osteopaths. They also tend to think outside the box. And, it's a lot like 1950's style medicine, where the doctor comes out to get you, and treats you like a person instead of a number. The ones I go to have both called me to tell me results over the phone, and insurance covers them. I hope you can find the type of doctor you need.

Hi Liz - I took a holistic health class a year ago, and a naturopathic doc guest lectured. He took me as a volunteer - I had what's called 'frozen shoulder'(very limited range of motion and mucho pain). He manipulated my shoulder/arm(felt like yanking it out). But when he finished(he felt all over my shoulder/back and enumerated all the problems), I was blown away! For the first time in months, I could have done a wind up and pitched a softball game. I went to him as a patient after that several times(need to start again). He specialized in muscle/joint/dislocation - but way different and far superior to chiropractors(been there, done that). Also, he had adjusted his fees to accomodate the fact that insurance didn't cover his services.

I also see an osteopath. I was delighted with the difference in her proactive, open minded approach toward total wellness after all those years of guys grinding away at just treating disease. I loff her!

They are more likely (like the naturopath Janice saw) to manipulate gently to release (in my case) a stuck vertebra, a rib... to use stretching and manipulation in general to solve muscular and skeletal problems. That's what my neurologist does, who is a D.O. My family practice D.O., a woman, is big on proactive treatment, sharing information, videos, and books which address various issues. She also believes in herbal and other supplements. She has sent me to medical specialists (as did the neurologist) when the problem indicated a specialist was needed. I don't know if my experience is typical, but these two doctors are the most approachable folks I've ever known. Incidentally, my family practice dr. always spends at least an hour with me, and 1-1/2 is not uncommon. It's like brainstorming with a very well informed friend, and I get to give a lot of input. I also am eager to do my homework, so she'll perhaps tell me to find out what I can about "...." later asking me what I DID learn.

Back in the 1930s my grandmother was an assistant to a D.O., which very much influenced me. This grandmother could look at my fingernails and tell me I needed to eat some specific food because there was a vitamin deficiency. She had all of those old fashioned common sense medical answers

I forgot to say another key thing about my experience with the naturopathic doc. Prior to that one time, in class session with him, I had been bounced around from pillar to post in the mainstream medical community - my regular MD sent me to an x-ray lab who sent me to physical therapy(they treated me until my insurance stopped paying - 6 months) and at the end of the trail(after all money anyone could suck out of my insurance had been sucked out), my range of motion was only marginally better. And they had begun speaking of 'surgery'. Oh, also, the naturopathic doc even charged me less than his half hour rate if it didn't take the full half hour!!! And gave me a reduced rate when my dh(the unbeliever) came at the same time. Now the dh can't say enough good things about the naturopath! :)
