I often feel that there are more things that I'd like to do than I actually accomplish or have time for. Anyone else? What time management techniques do you use?

Ann, as I wrote in the artist card thread, I keep a homebook. it is jsut a black three ring hardcover book with plastic leaf pages and whatnot in it. I keep a calendar in it (one of the free ones formt he meat market) and I keep absolutley everythign in it, from menus to trades and swaps to recipes and craft/project ideas. That's what keeps my house running.

Hey Ann,

Since you asked...after 27 year of feeling scattered, homemaking wise, I finally tried an idea I read in a book called (I think) the Simple Living Guide. One of the contributors cleaned one different room each day, and just straightened and tidied the remainder of the house. So, this is what I came up with.

On Monday, I clean the kitchen. This only takes me about an hour. The requirement for me is that I tidy the rest of the house first, then clean the kitchen. On Tuesday, I clean the bathrooms, following the requirement for Monday. On Wednesday, I do whatever I want. Lots of times I pay bills, do grocery shopping, etc. On Thursday, I clean the three bedrooms and tidy the rest of the house. On Friday, I clean the living room. On the weekend, I do laundry, and just hang out.

Now this may not seem like time management in general, but for me personally, if my house isn't organized, nothing else in my life is, either. I would never presume to tell anyone how to take care of their home, and I am comfortable in anyone's home, neat or not...that is never an issue with me. But, after 26 years of raising kids, I finally came across this, and it seems to work for me. If I have all the housework done, then I have the whole day to homeschool, cook, craft, etc. And I can schedule them in easily, because I don't have to worry about a messy house and undone laundry.

Well, this certainly sounds self-righteous, doesn't it!!! I didn't mean for it to, I just wanted you to know what works for me. I hope you get lots of good ideas!!

Val

Ann- Have you checked out FlyLady yet? She breaks things down (way down) so you have manageable tasks all the time . It's done with a good sense of humor and I find it helpful when I get to the point where I look around and say Everything needs to get done...NOW! The week after holiday break is always catch up for me because of kids, husband and random visitors adding to the chores. Delegate is also a management technique that is working. I don't have to do EVERYTHING
myself! Do they grumble...some but better than me grumbling ALL the time!

with a happy heart
