Is anyone else here addicted to vintage luggage and train cases? I am sooooo stuck on them. So is my best friend. She actually got ME started on them, and I am not sure who has more. I've gotten some great pieces on tag sales for very little. I've written several blogs on them, and use them for storage, as a knitting bag, decor, and opened to display photos. I have one on my dresser to hold my vintage hankies. My husband always says I need a 12-step program for vintage, and maybe now one just for luggage.
I swore I would not buy anymore. But it's okay if someone GIFTS one to you, right? OMG! One of my knitting students (I teach classes) knows how much I love them, and bought this beauty for me! I was floored! So yup. Fell off that vintage train case wagon but how special! She is just the nicest lady. Now I will have to do something random and nice for someone else, and send her a thank you note, for sure!
Anyone else addicted to vintage luggage?

The florist shop in my small town also sells garage sale finds and other items. She has had several train cases there for around $15. I've seen some of them in other places decorated with fabrics and chalk paint and have almost decided to decorate one myself. I hope she has some when I make my decision.

Yup, count me in as an "addict". I have one that I used all kinds of lace pieces on the top. It is ecru colored and I use it for my toiletries when traveling or glamping. I have another one that has fabric pieces, ribbon, rick-rack on it that is my "project case". I have my embroidery, papercraft projects, etc. in it and it goes with me everywhere too.
I have a collection of larger pieces that we use for our glamping gear and I've redone the insides of several pieces, a couple for my daughter. We like the cream/ecru colored pieces and that's what we have for our glamping gear.
I'll try to post pics of the traincases I've redone sometime. I've completely redone the insides of a traincase for my daughter and the outside of another with Mary Janes Glamping fabric that I sold.
I've found these pieces at thrift stores for not much . . . $1.00-2.00 for the traincases and no more than $5. for the larger pieces! CJ

So far I haven't seen any at thrift shops at such a great price. Hope I do!

I'm a fan of the vintage cardboard suitcases. I have a stack of four in my bedroom that hold all kinds of things. My two rag dolls sit on top.
Two of the suitcases I bought at a garage sale for $1 each. They are a matched pair in two sizes.
The other two I glorious picked up from the curb. A matched pair in two sizes. One was filled with quilt scraps.
In my part of Texas vintage cardboard suitcases go for $$.

I've also seen lots of those larger suitcases made into end tables. Great ideas for storage.

CeeJay, I remember one you re-did, very early on when I first joined the sisterhood. Wow, it was a beauty! I have a vintage one I picked up for $5, but NEVER have seen prices as low as what you found, you lucky girl. The most I paid was $30 for my first one off of Ebay, that I wanted for my knitting. It had to have a tray. I have an old red one that is probably 40's or earlier. Still has the bottles and jars in it. One has the remnants of dried lotion, the other powder that smells like my grandmother's old powder, just kinda sour. I've never cleaned the contents out, though it does creep me out a little, lol.
None of the ones I have are in really bad shape, so I like to keep them "as is" and simply add embellishments like a vintage hankie tied on. I have a black one that was mine from the early 90's. Not as much charm as a vintage one. I'd like to Glamp that one up in a vintage cherries style but never have gotten around to it. I'm on a facebook group page that redoes and decorates vintage train cases. Some of them look so amazing, others kinda make me sad because they redo one that was vintage or antique and in good shape. I'm funny that way.
Just another thing that was so much more charming, useful, and well-made than today, right?

I did buy one at an antique store in Idaho for $6.00 . . but that was a steal. In great shape except for a fairly strong odor inside. I've had a bar of lavendar soap in it since and the odor is pretty much gone. However, I use that one for handtools (pliers, screwdriver, etc.) zip ties, etc. for our glamper.

The only traincase that needed major work was the one I did for my daughter. I found it at the bottom of my sister's closet and the inside was in terrible shape, but I got it all fixed up, added a new mirror and everything. I think she uses it for her "project case" . . . and it's the only one I've gotten that had a tray. CJ

I found one very similar to your yellow case, Nicole. It is olive green. Found it in a thrift store in Des Moines, IA about a yr. ago and paid $10.00. Perfect condition. Gifted it to grand daughter who uses it as her traveling make-up case. She loves to do make-up on other people!
My daughter has her grandmother's light blue American Tourister luggage. Sigh. Makes me wish I still had my bright red Samsonite from the 60's.

I had one of these suitcases as a child. Mine was a burgundy color and I use to store my dolls inside. It was my luggage that I choose to pack for vacations!! They are such strong and sturdy suitcases. I would like to find some more! I like the idea of using them to store yarn and such. That would clear up some clutter on my end table and be a nice decoration for the living room.

Ceejay, your re-do is gorgeous. I still have the beige Sampsonite I used on my honeymoon 54 years ago. I use it for yarn.

I remember we used to have a set of Samsonite luggage, growing up, in a pretty blue color that included a train case like the one shown here. I never thought about wanting to keep any of the pieces but I see here that there are many creative ways to give these oldies a new lease on life. CeeJay, your lace topped case is very sweet!

I have one that I love that is in perfect condition! It still has the tray on the inside and the key! It is a tan color and from the '50's I think. I am not fond of the color but it is in to good of shape to redo, I just could not do a good enough job. I keep it in my studio with sewing treasures, ribbon etc in it. It truly is a beauty! Nicole, it was sweet of your friend to give you such a treasure. CJ, yours is so girly, perfect for glamping! Nice job redoing it!

This a Samsonite case I bought at a thrift for $1.00. In great shape, no tray but in that awful green color. So, I used these pieces of fabric, ribbon, rick-rack etc. and lots of Mod Podge and gave it a makeover. No mirror, never had one so I just decorated it with lace, etc. inside. This is the case I use for my projects such as embroidery, etc. It, too, has been on many trips and is holding up well. CJ

Yep! add me to the list of VTC addicts! I even re-did the interior of one with pink & black Scottie Dog Duct-Duck Tape! lol! My 1st VTC re-do was back in 2007.. the 2nd one I did was in 2008(I think) and it is even in one of the Maryjane Farm mags... towards the back of the magazine. Since then,,, I snag train cases when ever I see them at a great price. They make great sewing/crochet totes, craft tool totes and I have 3 that are each ready with basic toiletries to Grab-n-Go when I am heading on a trip or going glamping. I even have one in my little studio shop w/basic tools & glue gun, etc for when I need to do a quick fix or repair on an item. They are really wonderful.

Here is my Vintage Train Case, as you can see it is in real good shape and it actually has two keys that I tied to the handle with blue ribbon so I would not loose them. I picked this up at a yard sale I believe many years ago for almost nothing.

This is a blue Samsonite case I got at a thrift store for $1-2 bucks, in excellent condition. No tray, but had great mirror. It didn't NEED any redo, but I decided I wanted to do it using Mary Jane's Glamper fabric, which I did. Embellished with ribbon, rick=rack, buttons, etc. using lots of Mod Podge. Inside in great condition, I just trimmed it with ribbon and rick-rack. I used this case on a couple of trips, but ended up selling it. CJ

My daughter and I have a collection of larger pieces that, mostly were in great shape. There were a couple that really needed new insides and I redid those so that they could be used. I have all the glamper cases packed with our glamper "stuff" and at the ready for a glamping trip! CJ
