Hi Farmgirls, I'm thinking of anything in particular that presents a challenge in finishing the actual merit badge template . . . not the appolications for the certificates but the little hexagon design that most of us embroider.
Anything you girls find a challenge for yourselves??
Just wondering . . . CJ

I take a 'let me do it my way' attitude when it comes to the badges. Some I have painted with fabric pens ~ others I have embroidered. My plan for the ones I have that I have not touched since I printed the pattern out and the ones I hope to apply for soon is to embroidery all in brown thread. I'm into brown work and love the look of it. Not to say I may do more with the fabric pens - I really like that look too.

Ooohhhh, the brown work sounds neat! I remember using the embroidery paints long time ago when I was a teenager and that was "the thing" to do. But, my mom taught me how to embroider too!
I'll bet the fabric pens are lovely too. I do use a fine point black one for some of the really fine things, like the markings on the canning jar for the "Self Sufficiency" badge.

I too find that the badge designs are hard for me to embroider and have them come out looking OK. I have a stack in my basket that need to be done and I need to try and tackle them soon.

Interesting topic CJ. I haven't started to do mine yet but in embroidery I don't like to do faces and it is kind of hit or miss with the way they come out. Eyes I usually do in tiny french knots if I can.

I have a more basic problem. I am not entirely comfortable printing the design on fabric. That is the main reason I haven't tried applying for badges.

Marie, I don't print on fabric either. I traced the printed pattern onto fabric holding it on a glass lamp shade. Hopefully I will come up with a homemade light-box which will be easier to use.

I do embroidery on my badges and also some fabric paint and some have fabric markers. little bit of this and that. ha I like to put buttons on my badges. I get some cute buttons like horse dreams I have a little horse button on one corner. backyard farmer a rabbit button in one corner. The badge that eggs in the basket has a chicken button, quilt badge has a old sewing machine button, badge with the apron has butterfly buttons. I like to put buttons on my badges. I am working on three of my new badges going to look for more cute whimisical buttons for them. I would like to see photos of what some of you are doing to decorate your badges. I feel I sort of run amuck with mine. ha ha

Teresa, I use buttons as well on m badges. I use them to indicate the different levels of badges, instead of the embroidered hexagon, one button for beginner up to three of expert. I also decorate with buttons, I have a couple little black ants on my glamping badge, I used actual buttons on my "Buttons" badge instead of embroidering them, etc.
Sara, I found the pen in the embroidery supplies area of fabric/craft stores. CJ

I like hearing what you guys are doing. This helps me get an idea for what I would like to do on my badges.

Sabrina, Don't feel bad. I haven't even printed of any mine off yet. I hate to get started when I haven't finished my projects yet. I am planning to do them once I put in for my next 2 badges. Then I will take a break and work on my stitching badges. I also think it will help to motivate me to do more.

I have a question. Do the badges have to be on fabric? Can they be printed out on paper of choice - colored - and made into a collage? Maybe FarmGirl related pictures & items could be added. Krista can you find out for us?
It would be nice to have a choice as we add more & more badges.

I don't think there are any specific requirements as to what our badges are printed on or how they are finished. I had once asked Brian if there were an "rules and regulations" or could we be creative. His reply was "creativity always trumps rules" . . . :D
I don't think we even HAVE to finish them at all! I'm just trying to not get as far behind as I once was. So far, I'm all caught up, finished embroidering my "Collect It!" badge yesterday. CJ
