Just another thing I do . . . when I first started doing badges I felt like the template I printed off with print margins set to "None" was smaller than I liked. SO, I change that printer setting to "Fit to Printable Area" and it enlarges them a little bit, making them easier to embroider . . . at least that's my preference. CJ

CJ I like your idea about buttons for the different levels. What's nice about that is that you can add the buttons even after the hexagon is displayed (how ever you like to display your badges). Otherwise you need to wait so that you can keep stitching a line as you progress!
For those of you who do not like to trace your design, you can use a water soluble stabilizer such as Transfer eze. You photocopy/scan your badge on the stabilizer, stick it on your fabric and stitch away. Once done, it dissolves in water. I love that stuff for when I stitch design on towels.

Carole, Your transfer eze idea sounds good too . . . I probably can't get anything like that around here, though. I can't even bet the Mark-B-Gone pens here . . . I've had to buy them when in the "big city".
I do stitch one hexagon around my design but just the one and sew the buttons in a row in the lower right hand angle.

Oh I was just about to come and ask how y'all get your pattern on the fabric you are embroidering...I'll see if I can get that transfer eze through amazon....Other ideas in case I can't? I bought the printable fabric but it was really expensive. Also what type of fabric do you do your badges on? Just plain cotton or?? I'm not sure what I can get here...but I can order anything from fabric.com....oh maybe they will have transfer eze too! Now to decide on the fabric for my apron. I found a pattern I like but need to order it.

Sabrina, I like to use natural colored Supermuslin that I buy at Walmart. I use a small lightbox and trace the pattern on the fabric using a blue "Mark-B-Gone" marker. The blue lines are there for you to follow, then when you're done the blue washes right now with plain water leaving only the embroidered design. Works great! CJ

The biggest challenges I have found with my badges are:
A. Fear of messing them up. I had to redo the recipes badge because I was unhappy with how it came out the first time!
B. Filling in larger areas. I have started using pieces of fabric that I embroider around the edges to avoid embroidering the entire space, I do like how they are turning out, but I know this has been something that held up my badge embroidery in the past
C. Now I don't know what to do with the embroidered ones. I plan to continue working on badges but want a way to display them currently. I am not a confident quilter yet, so I was thinking of maybe finding a vintage quilt with hexagon patches and just sewing my badges on to the already made quilt?... What have others done with their badges to display them while still working on others? :)

Sabrina, your local quilt shop should be able to order Transfer eze. It truly is a wonderful project. When I get impulsive and do not feel like tracing, that's what I use. I actually only use that on towels. It also acts as a stabilizer.
A question I have about the badge is "can we pick a different project or does it have to be the exact project listed in the merit badge?" - For the hand embroidery intermediate level it states to embroider "days of the Week" from MJ book. Would it be okay to embroider another pattern with days of the week?

Question; how do you show what level you are, on the badges? I just earned a level 2 for my Origami badge.

"Pixiedustdevil", The standard way for showing levels is by stitching a second hexagon border on your badge, then you'd do a third border for your expert.
I decided when I first started earning badges to sew a button on for each level. I do stitch one hexagon border around and then sew small buttons on the lower right section of that border. I use a variety of buttons, sometimes all the same color, sometimes different colors or mixed "novelty" buttons (such as stars, hearts, etc.)
I just wanted to be "different". CJ

Diana, I'm thinking of something like that in a mini-wall quilt, but I haven't gotten any further than an idea. I have to think about how to make room for more badges as they come along.
And, Diana, is that something YOU did or a pic you found somewhere. I know they aren't merit badges, but they are beautiful! CJ
