Isn't this the one where the young girl wants to go to a private school but lives on the "wrong" side of town? She ends up using another address so she can go to the school after her father encourages her. Then her father dies, her mother is trying to raise her and her siblings etc. I think at the end when she graduates there are white roses for her from her father - something like that. If so, I love this one.

This is one of my favorites besides To Kill a Mockingbird (both book and movie). Oh! The relationship she had with her father--I felt very much the same about my daddy--very bittersweet, indeed.

Later, when I left performing arts boarding school and moved to New York, I chose Williamsburg Brooklyn to live where the story was set, because they still have quaint neighborhoods, and it feels still like small town america even though it's in an urban environment. People tended flower gardens, and had groceries and butchers. I lived in (what I thought) must have been such a similar tenement style apartment--we had the laundry lines connecting to the other apartment buildings across a bare courtyard area with a few sparse weeds, and a tree. The smells, the different cultures--just amazingly portrayed. This book was such an education for me.

I own both a first edition and the dvd....so yes, I love it

Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet.

Never read the book, but I liked the movie. I love her plan to read through the library alphabetically, only she get's stuck on Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy. What a title...I thought it was made up until I got to college and had to read it (only excerpts, thank goodness).

Love the book, but have never seen the movie. Do you ladies who have seen it recommend it?
