OK, so for those of you who know me,,, know that I have the WORST penmanship on the planet! Seriously, I do! 
and I have lots of excuses....
this is today's excuse!
The other day I received a Thank You note in the mail and a sweet correspondence from two dear friends....
I so break out in the most biggest smile... as both dear friends have the most lovely penmanship...
I wish I had such lovely penmanship... but so appreciate it when I receive such sweet notes.

Well, Gracie IF it makes you feel any better...it isn't even taught in Schools any more.
So, you are already ahead of the game. LOL
Actually, I'm all about bringing Cursive writing back into the public schools. To me it is
so sad that it is considered an obsolete tool in the education of our youth.
I have won penmanship competitions over the years and I owe it to all my teachers who drilled
us continually in letter formation. Do you remember doing those in Elementary School??? Where
you would have to write lines and lines of just one letter of the alphabet in cursive? Until it
was just a natural free flowing piece of art almost. (+:
Anyway, I have never seen your handwriting that I know of so I bet it isn't that bad...not like
kids today who only print.

My handwriting is awful too. I remember my oldest son's 5th grader teacher accusing him of bringing in a false absence note from home. She had said, "There's no way your mother could have written that." I let her know that yes indeed, I had written in it and she was very embarrassed. (One of the worst teacher's he ever had).
I too love handwritten letters through the snail mail, but rarely get one these days. I send them out a lot though and just hope the recipients can read my writing!

I work with 2nd graders. Some of them want to learn cursive but there is no time in the school day for it. I would love to teach it in an after school class but I have no time. One of the girls in the class I work with came recently from another school and knows cursive. I haven't asked her how she learned it. All the other kids believe she is a rock star because she can do it. I have a friend who cannot read cursive so I have to write all his letters in standard.
I had lessons in school, I think. My mother was born in Europe so she learned cursive on paper lined horizontally and with a 45 degree right angle so that the letter positions would lean correctly. She is left-handed so it was difficult but she has the nicest handwriting. She drilled it into me like nobody's business and she still says my handwriting is terrible.
Reading difficult handwriting is an art. I worked in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Minnesota for three years while I was in school. While there I had to decipher a variety of difficult handwriting in order to type scientific papers for publication. As a result, I can read almost any handwriting no matter how um . . . difficult. Grace's handwriting does not even reach the hard stage for readability. Take heart.

For many years I worked in hospitals and doctor offices and have transcribed TONS of handwritten physician orders and LISTENED to hours and hours of dictated notes that I had to transcribe.
I learned to read some of the WORST handwriting ever . . . and some of their voice dictation was as bad as, or worse than their handwriting.
Transcribing voice dictation requires incredible listening skills!

As for my penmanship...(or lack there of)... I should have been a Doctor or Mad Scientist! it is that bad! lol!
I often say,,, my brain thinks to fast for my hand to keep up with it... heeheehee!
My father was career Army and we were moved around almost every year so I didn't have consistency in School... and I struggled to barely keep up.... on many of my report cards teachers commented on my lack of focus and that I was often times day dreaming... as one teacher wrote, "Grace is often times, not with us"... yes,,, I have that report card still... but it's ok, I figure my brain is very active and creative, that I get distracted very easily... and that also translates into my penmanship. lol! But what fun(wink wink) you all must have when trying to figure out what the heck I am writing! heeheehee!
My parents both have lovely penmanship,, as does my sister... yep,, I am that duck in the pond of swans... lolol! but that's ok,, cuz I 'quack' myself up!! lol!

My penmanship is not beautiful but, I like it. It has evolved with me over the years. I can look at certain letters and remember when and why I began to write them that way. My penmanship reflects me and my ever changing moods.
It saddens me that children today are missing out on this form of expression. My oldest daughter had been practicing calligraphy for the last several years. Beyond the beauty of the letters she can show deep emotion with just a fabulously written word.
FYI - January 23rd is National Handwriting Day. I have purchased pens and attached them to note cards and a tag encouraging my co-workers to practice the lost art of handwriting.

Had to laugh when I read this Grace. This would be an excuse my son uses, that he is a Mad Scientist! I homeschooled my kids and he did Penmanship right through 11th grade. Guess what? His handwriting is the worst ever! I use to make him practice over and over but now that has all been tossed I guess. He says it works for him and no one can copy it. [:/]

There is quite a movement afoot in many places to bring cursive writing back to our children. One concern is that they will not be able to read historic documents if they aren't taught cursive. As much as I appreciate the convenience of an e-reader or the quick response time from an e-mail, there is still nothing quite like the little thrill of getting a letter in the mailbox at the end of the driveway.

Every single report card and job evaluation I have every received included a remark about my good penmanship. So you can imagine my horror that my fourteen year-old daughter can neither read nor write in cursive. It is truly a dying art.
