Do you ever wonder what the story is behind an old barn?
Where I currently live there are a lot of old and not so old cattle ranches,,, some are remnants from the turn of the Century (1900).... some barns/building are dilapidated,, laying on the ground, some leaning from decades of wind and snow storm abuse... and some not that old but left abandoned for what ever reason...
This is a barn I pass every time I head over to Rolling Oaks Ranch where I help a friend on her small ranch..
I wonder what this old neglected barn's story is...

Grace that barn has cousins here in Texas. I don't know their stories so I just make them up. One of these days I may even write them down.

You mean stories like ... the time Quantrill's raiders rode across the Red River out of Indian Territory (now OK) into Texas. To save herself as Quantrill and his men raided her home Loretta Wayne hid in the loft of her barn. Bessie, her shotgun, cradled in her arms ...
This story is based partially on fact. Quantrill did come into Grayson County, TX where he killed a man.

Just think how wonderful it would be if these barns could be rehabbed and made into housing for the homeless in the rural areas. I know this is a big problem in Minnesota.

I always look at old barns and wonder what they were light in their hay day years. Then I think about what I would do if I was lucky enough to have one on my property. One thing for sure would be one of those big barn quit squares that faced the road so everyone could enjoy it too.

Around here it's old cement fence posts. Most of the old barns have fallen down or been torn down, but I often wonder (many times out loud) what it was like when there was a fence around that post - and a barn to go with it :)

Great story, Sara. There are many old barns like that by me in Texas, too. I have a 4 foot quilt block on my old barn, and three 2-foot blocks that need to be hung somewhere.

funny,,, the hubby & I drove by the barn today,,, on the way to the ranch... and there was a family (mini van and all) stopped by the fence line to the barn... yep, taking photos... I really got a kick out of watching them as we drove by,,, which prompted another 'story'...
The City folk happen upon an old weather worn barn, they stood there holding hands and dreamed of what it would be like to live in the country and to have such a marvelous barn as this... when suddenly one of the little tots exclaimed, "mommy, I gotz go poddy'.

I have been photographing barns for many years and it really hurts to see how many I have pictures of are no more. But there is a bright side. Some states like Iowa, have a barn restoration program. There is some money available if you put in half the money. Minnesota has an organization called Friends of Minnesota Barns. Does your state have any?

Love old barns and the stories! We have quite a few in our area, some still being used, but sadly more that look like they'll fall down any minute. Since we sit on mostly granite around here, most of the really old barns have stone foundations. Just beautiful! Bonnie, come on out and take some pictures! What a special hobby!

Yes, all the time, Grace! I love old barns (and houses). We are getting ready to buy a cabin built in 1830. I plan to go to the assessors office when I can and back date deeds. I really want to know what family built it! It is rather large for the time; 2 stories, 4 rooms, 2 fireplaces. Here is a picture!

| I live in WV and there are hundreds of old, abandoned barns and houses in this state. There are so many possibilities of why that is! They make great subjects for art work. Unfortunately, too many people want to buy a place and destroy the history in the process. Towns tear down old houses to put in double wides, rather than rehabilitate beautiful homes. The property we bought here in 1981 had no buildings on it that were still standing but we know where they were from the stones places here and there. |

Bonnie...I'm with you, I too Photograph Old Barns and I think it is just a shame to see them
go by the wayside. Those Barnes speak stories to me too Sara and they are part of Our History.

We have a farm family fairly close by who refurbished their round barn! It's absolutely gorgeous. They held a quilt show in this barn showcasing their family's hand made quilts through several generations. I believe they are planning to offer the barn for special occasions.
