Our one-year old heifer calf, "Freckles" has become spoiled. I started hand feeding her through the fence a few handfuls before she goes to the big chunks that we pitch. Now she's waiting at the fence for me and begs for handfuls. My hubby says that I now have a "little pet cow". :D CJ

After spending the winter out in the big neighbor pasture and then with tons of snow having to throw hay to the Longhorns, they are all now back in their "home" pasture. They seem to be happy to be there . . . I'm glad too because they're easier to keep track of.
The dark brown colored steer (pics on page 1 with all the mud on his face) is scheduled to be butchered in a month, sold half of him to a neighbor and we'll keep the other half. Really tasty, lean, organic, TOTALLY grass-fed beef . . . yum! CJ

Freckles (1 year old in December) up close and being silly!
Freckles, naturally polled for some odd reason. Both parents had horns but she's growing a "conehead" instead. Her momma is not in any of these pictures.
Beautiful (just turned a year old this month) and Siobhan (2 1/2 years old) Snowflake is momma to both
Beautiful, Siobhan, Snowflake and Freckles. Snowflakes horns are uneven and my hubby says that somewhere in her lineage there was a genetic "boo-boo".
Getting a drink can be a challenge when there are long horns involved. There are three steers and Freckles momma not pictured . . elsewhere in the pasture

Butchered another steer in June, so we're down to a total of seven Longhorns. Two steers, which will be butchered when ready. On young heifer and two pairs (with heifer calves).
I sure want out of the "cow business" . . . we can't find any buyers interested in Longhorns. They are not dairy cows and many folks don't consider them good for eating. For some reason, there is the desire for "fat cows" for beef. We're not breeding them either and they need to go to new homes where they can be bred. CJ
