We had hoped for a longer season of foraging for our Longhorns, so we don't have to haul (and buy) hay. But we're also grateful for the snow we've gotten as we really, really, really . . . did I say "really"? . . need it!
So, this is how we have to haul it to them. It's about 1 1/4 miles round trip down and back up a hill to the pasture where they are. They are able to get water because there is a constantly running creek, and if the snow is not too deep they can forage around the creek and in parts of this field.

Yep, that's exactly how we hauled wood during the winter on the farm. Often times there would be a kid riding on top

Now I know where all the snow is! It sure is beautiful - even when is makes more work. We were supposed to get our first accumulating snow last night. The official report called it a trace. Didn't even cover the grass :( I'm glad you're getting some much needed moisture though. If you get a chance I'd love to see a picture of your longhorns in the snow. Thanks for sharing this beautiful picture.

Ceejay, I know your poor Bramble couldn't and shouldn't pull that much weight. It was just a joke.

Here they are, poor things, waiting for feed on a snowy day! We have only eight Longhorns and seven of them are in this pic. Patty was off to the left, she's in a separate pic.
Closer up of six of them, unfortunately, Freckles' head is behind the post. She is a year-old heifer and naturally polled.
Patty, the matriach of the bunch. She's 100% Longhorn.
"Snowflake" (momma) who is 100% Longhorn and her last calf, "Beautiful" (born May 2015)
There are two momma cows, three heifers and three steers. The two momma cows are 100% Longhorn, the rest of them are 3/4 Longhorn and 1/4 Angus! The dark colored one with the nice horns is the next steer to go in the freezer! With the exception of Patty, all of them were born and raised right here in the same pasture.
And, yes, they all have names! No, it doesn't bother us to name them and then put them in the freezer!
Thanks for letting me share! CJ

Longhorns are my favorite, simply because I just like to look at them!! There are some down the road from us and I love to drive by them and see what they are up to! I also love how much snow you have. Wish we had some more here!

I love longhorns too. It's such a kick to see them in the snow when I'm used to seeing them in Texas in the warmth. Too bad you have to haul the bails by hand. In Minnesota we have snowmobiles.

We used to have a snowmobile, but no longer. We have a four-wheeler which could be used but the snow is too deep right now. It's no big deal to haul it on the toboggan. We only have to haul one bale for the eight animals, so it's not too bad. And it's good exercise for us and Bramble! :D CJ

Thanks for the pics CJ. I love to see all cows! We finally got our first snowfall too. Our cows are locked out of the pastures though and in the barn. (Too muddy for the dairy cows and now too cold - frozen teats!) So, I don't have any snow cow pictures yet. They were running around the barn having a grand old time yesterday though. I think they were as excited about the snow as I was.
Are your polled cows from the angus breed then?

I just remember the thought I had when riding horseback in Texas and coming around the corner in front of this enormous longhorn. Wow. It was huge. But I love them too and love your pictures too Ceejay.

A couple years ago we "bartered" one of our yearling heifers to a neighbor in exchange for some work, however, we were still on the short end for fair amount of work. Well, this past week this neighbor BOUGHT over 100 bales of hay to help finish out the winter for the cows AND will help us with feeding chores. An answer to prayer! CJ
