So tis the season to be merry.......unless you go down into your basement and find that the septic is frozen and is backing up in the house. Oh Lordy what a night. First the discovery, then off to the hardware store to rent a roto-rooter snake device, hours of tromping through what I will fondly call muck water(eeeeeeeeeewwwwwwww) only to realize after hours of cleaning the pipes that the darn thing is not clogged but frozen. Now to have a septic service come out and pump it ($$$$$ yikes) and then we have to watch our water use til spring when it unfreezes. Ya gotta love the old farm house some days!!! Looks like a lean Christmas here this year.

Oh Beth! What a drag. Glad you got it all cleaned up. And a lean Christmas at B&B Farm where the Head Farmgirl is super crafty? You'll find amazing things to do, I'm sure!

Here's hoping you are out of the muck and back to normal real soon.
Do you have a leaching field, mound or tank type system? Have you had a septic company pump you out since you've been there? Has anyone driven across the leaching field (if you have one) recently? If the "level" is high, the excess rain, moisture etc has no where to go quickly and if closer to the surface, more likely to freeze. That is usually why freezing w/ back up occurs. We had this problem at the inlaws and you definitely have my sympathies, it isn't just inconvenient it is a BIG problem until it's fixed.

Just a quick update- the septic company came out today and pumped my system. They will be back tomorrow to replace the lift station motor which only sets me back a cool grand. Well thats life on the farm! These things happen I guess. Thanks fro all your kind words. I wouldn't trade this life for all the riches in the world. Being a farmgirl is great. Sometimes the road just gets a little bumpy!!

You really take me back to when we first got our place! I adore my old home, but geez they used to run the graywater from the kitchen and laundry out to a leachfield through a stone wall! And three guesses what would happen in the winter.

Then we got wise, and hubby drilled a hole in the pipe and added a heat tape, and then sealed the hole. That got us through quite a few years until we could afford to replace the septic system and replumb everything.

No more frozen pipes or problems. And I still love my old house!
