I'm shy, so it took me a long time to say hello. I live with my husband, and the youngest of my five (homeschooled) children. My oldest works on a farm out of state. She's bringing up a pig soon to add to our menagerie of sheep and poultry. Our neighbors buy poultry from us to butcher on their own, and next year they are looking to purchase our lambs as well. I work off the farm, and also volunteer at the local jail. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Wow Andrea - welcome! We are practically neighbors!! I'm just down the road a few miles in Cresco. My boyfriend lives just outside of Hamlin. I will be in Varden at the Conservation Area on Saturday working at Conservation Day. That's not too far from you, so if you get a chance, stop by and say hello. I'll be working at the homemade ice cream stand. I hope you enjoy it here on MJF as much as I do!

Hugs,
Luanne

Thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome here.
Hudsoninaf, I hope you find your farm and it will be exciting to go along on your journey.
I am grateful every day for our place-how the moon comes up through the trees, how the ferns smell. I am grateful it was here for us to come to when I ended up a single mom of five. We appreciate it even more because we will probably lose half of it in a few years because of my brother.
Beekeepersgirl-what flavor are you making? Sorry, will be working Saturday. Hope you get a good turnout. We sure need rain, huh? Sure we will meet-looking forward to this!
Deena9-are you near Lancaster?

Hi Andrea - We are making vanilla ice cream on Saturday. Sunday we will be at Baer Motorcycle on Route 6 all day for their open house. We will make two batches there - one vanilla and one strawberry. If you're free on Sunday, stop by at Baer. You're right, we do need rain. It is very dry. We are lucky our veggies did well because we are able to water them easily. We don't have a garden, just "grow boxes" that have water reservoirs in the bottom, so they did well. We only grow herbs, tomatoes and peppers. It's just 2 of us, so really don't need huge quantities of everything. Plus, I still work full time, so don't need all that canning and freezing to do at night. Looking forward to meeting you!

Hi Andrea, and welcome! I'm just a bit down south of you in Delaware. So glad you joined in, and I'm sure you'll love it. Your life sounds very busy! Volunteering at the jail must be really enlightening-- that's quite a compassionate ministry!

Happy Day!

Song Sparrow,
For some reason, I just felt right at home when I drove up to the jail. It is no big thing on my part and a highlight of my week. We study parenting, budgeting, anger management, etc. We made cards for a nursing home. Anybody have ideas, please share. Many are in for drugs. Heroin hitting rural areas badly.

dena91-sorry, I don't buy fabric cause I am lousy at any craft! Hoping becoming a farmgirl will change that? I miss homeschooling. Do you think your grandchildren will be homeschooled?

The open house at Baer is from 10-3 I think. We will be there a little before to set up and after to clean up. We will be making vanilla ice cream in the AM and strawberry after lunch. Hope you can stop by - be sure to say hello !!

Not sure; sometimes they talk of wishing they had gone to PS so they could have had more friends - not always guaranteed. Hopefully they will grow to appreciate the benefits of HS as they mature - they are 23, 20, 14, and 5. My 14 yr old just said yes he would, yeah!

I love HS too! I will surely miss it when it is over.

I don't have much sewing skill either; I taught myself to quilt a few years ago and just keep collecting beautiful fabric with hopes of having time in the future to use it!

Hello Andrea,

Welcome to MaryJanesFarm! Two funny things: my daughter's name is Andrea and she also home schools their children! :-)

Your farm sounds perfect... what a deal for your neighbors to be able to buy their poultry from you for harvest. And fresh lamb meat? Oh my word, there is nothing like it. I grew up on lamb in New Mexico and somedays I really miss it.

Big farmgirl hugs to you!

Dena91 Ours are 29,26,24,21, and 19. The middle boy is becoming a daddy this December. None of them are dating homeschoolers but a couple of them have said they are going to homeschool.

DoriTroutman- I've never had fresh lamb. This year will be our first time butchering. One of our boys is dating the daughter of a taxidermist/hunting guide so he is teaching us how to butcher lamb in exchange for meat. Our neighbors are originally from a village in Eastern Europe. Wish I could communicate better with the Grandma. She still dresses the old way and must be a fount of knowledge!
