My hubby has a few dozen white pique polo shirts left over from his old job (required uniform shirt). I want to make a rag rug from them, but am having "technical difficulties."
I cut the shirts into continuous 1.5" strips from the hem to armpits on a slight bias. I tried single-crochet with an N-hook, but when I went to stitch the SC coils together similar to starting an oval rag rug, it buckled terriby. Can anyone offer other ideas? Thanks! |

http://www.auntphillys.com/ Jennifer this is a site you might could use. It tells how to make a rug from strips of fabric. It is a little different than crocheting, but looks very similar. I had mentioned this method back a few days ago, and no one seemed to know of it. But when working with a texture fabric, it is harder to get it to move through and around each other. I would weave it into a rug using a frame. I will try and find this information. I find the weaving is easier that either of these methods. I purchased two frames years ago, and use my quilting scraps/strips to weave rugs, like the little pot holders made in elementary school. Good luck with the project, I'm sure you can get something done with the shirts!

I dont know what you are looking for exactly, but I made a rag rug a month or so ago and posted a tutorial on my blog and toward the bottom there are more links to follow. I didnt stitch the SC together, I just crocheted in a circle pattern and took out stitches when it buckled or addes them when it seemed to want to curl. It is the easiest way I know of the to a rag rug. But I dont know if this answers your question. I have a few vintage rag rug books to that I can look up something for you if you want.

There is a picture of one I made on my blog, I did mine like Eren, just kept going in a circle and adding or not depending on how it was laying. and I just chocheted around and around did not stitch anything. When I was done, I wet it real good, shaped it and put something heavy on it so it would dry flat.

This is a great idea. I was a manager at Burger King and they changed Management uniforms and I have quite a few shirts I could do this with.
