Oh my goodness good luck, look what I found in an antique store—a Jubilee cookbook published in 1964.
The intro says: A unique phenomenon occurs on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. Natives of the area know the signs to watch for—in the moon, the tide, and the winds. Shrimps, crabs, and fish race to the water’s edge and the cry of JUBILEE! … stay tuned for more from the intro of my precious find.
In the meantime, here’s one of the recipes (pages and pages more to share over the course of the year until our own Jubilee rolls around again in 2016):
Raspberry Tarts 2 (8 oz) packages cream cheese ½ pound butter 2 cups flour raspberry jam
Mix cheese, butter and flour, and refrigerate overnight. Roll thin on floured board and cut into squares. Place a bit of raspberry jam on each square, fold over and crimp edges. Bake in 350 degree oven 30 to 40 minutes. Yields about 45 tarts. Mrs. Leon McVay, Jr.

This recipe from Jubilee is a good one for someone with a milk cow.
Vichyssoise I
2 small onions, cut up 2 T butter 2 cups chicken broth 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes 1/2 t salt 1 cup milk 1 1/2 cups cream 1/8 t pepper 1 t salt 1/2 t nutmeg chives
Brown onion lightly in butter. Add chicken broth, potatoes and 1/2 t salt. Simmer about 40 minutes. Press the potato mixture through a fine sieve and add milk, one cup of cream, 1 t salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Bring to a boil. Strain and add the 1/2 cup cream, scalded. Cool and chill several hours. Serve cold, garnished with chopped chives. Serves 6. Mrs. B.F. King

I bet that book is quite interesting with it's location and story of great cooks in that region. Mobile isn't far from New Orleans and cooking with fresh sea food is a must. Talk about delicious recipes!

What a lucky find! I adore vintage cookbooks. In fact, a vintage cookbook was my first ever purchase from an antique store, and then I was hooked! That one looks like a great one!

I know this is an older post,,, but,,, Oh how I luv vtg. cookbooks,,, not because I like to cook... lol! but because I luv the graphics of linens, table settings and décor... hopefully this book has lots of both!

Anyone have blueberries coming on yet? Or huckleberries from the woods? (I have frozen blueberries from last year calling my name on this one:)
German Blueberry Pie
Pecan Sandies butter 3 eggs 1 8-oz pkg cream cheese 1 t vanilla 1 pint fresh blueberries
Crumble enough Pecan Sandies for pie crust. Blend with just enough butter to hold crumbs together. Press this mixture into an 8-inch pie pan and set aside. Add eggs, one at a time, to softened cream cheese, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. Pour mixture into pie shell. Sprinkle blueberries over the top (this will seem like an excessive amount of blueberries, but use them all, as they drop down into the custard). Bake in a 350°F oven for 25 minutes. When cool, chill several hours or overnight.

Oh blueberries have just come in here! We always go through so many over the rest of the summer and winter. I think I have about a cup left from last years and I think we had 60lbs in the freezer last year.

Here's a yummy sounding recipe from Mrs. Marion S. Adams, Sr.:
Almond Ice Box Cookies
1/2 pound butter 1/2 pound brown sugar 1 egg 3 T baking powder pinch of salt 1 T vanilla 1/4 pound almonds, blanched and lightly toasted
Cream butter and sugar well. Add egg and work in dry ingredients, sifted together. Add vanilla and floured nuts. Make into a roll and refrigerate several hours or overnight. Cut into thin slices and bake on greased cookie sheet in 350 degree F oven until crisp.

Yummy! MaryJane, I think that's easy enough for me to give it a try.
I saw Martha Stewart on her PBS show use a paper towel cardboard roll slit lengthwise to put a roll of plastic wrapped refrigerator cookies in to freeze.

Wow, these cookies do look yummy! It seems like that era had lots of "icebox" recipes for families. This recipe seems like it would be a great Easter weekend cookie to have in the house for family too.

I'm going to try both recipes! They sound wonderful! I wonder if ice box cookies are making a comeback? I've seen several of them in the last few weeks.

That blueberry pie sounds so yummy! I am definitely going to try that one! I love the pictures and graphics in vintage cookbooks. I have an old grange cookbook that was my husband's grandmother's and it has photos of the women all dressed up in dresses, hose and heels...and they address themselves and Mrs. Whoever instead of by their first names. Love it! |

Since our theme for this year's Jubilee Celebration is aprons, and we're working on an egg-gathering apron pattern, I thought I'd start posting some of the egg recipes found in our Jubilee cookbook. Remember, Jubilee Weekend is coming up May 7-8. Do you have an apron ready?
Scrambled Eggs with Cream Cheese (from Mrs. T. Potter Yeend)
1 package (3 ozs) cream cheese 6 T heavy cream 1 T butter or margarine 6 eggs 1 t salt dash fresh cracked black pepper dash cayenne pepper 1 t finely chopped chives or parsley
Work cheese with 2 T cream until soft and creamy. Melt butter or margarine in double boiler. Beat eggs, remaining cream, salt, both kinds of pepper, and chopped chives or parsley until well mixed. Pour into melted fat and cook over boiling water, stirring frequently, until eggs are set. Now stir in cream cheese mixture and cook a minute or so longer, just enough to heat mixture. Spoon over hot toast. Serves 4.

Whoa, now this is one rich and delicious sounding recipe. It sounds like a perfect brunch dish with some whole grain bread and salad.
