I googled wild chamomile, and this is what I found out. The leaves are edible and good in a salad but may become bitter by the time the flowers bloom. Like dandelions the leaves should be eaten while the plant is young. Both leaves and flowers are used in tea. The flowers exude a chamomile and pineapple aroma.

Thanks Sara!! TO me they smell like apple, but I guess pineapple makes sense too!

Just started drying basil and mint for winter recipes. Also freezing the mint for ice tea and mint butter.

Tomatoes in the dehydrator right now for tomato powder, completed 2 quarts of zucchini flour, 20 oz of stevia.

Theresa you have been busy. I have made tomato powder but how do you use the zucchini flour?

Sara, I use it in any recipe that calls for flour. For instance, if the recipe calls for 3 cups of flour I use 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of zucchini flour. Does not change the taste and extends my flour supply and as I always have way more zucchini than I can use, so after I freeze some for bread and cake I dehydrate to stretch out my wheat flour so none of the zucchini goes to waste.

Thanks Theresa, great way to use zucchinis.

Michelle, I've never dried pears. How do you prepare them for drying and for how long?

I love dried pears! Sadly, the raccoons got all of mine this year :(
Sara - when I dried mine last year I just pealed them, cored them, and sliced them.

I have some calendula flowers drying for some oil later. I need to get on the goldenrod that's flowering and some more plantain leaves soon.

Sara I do like Heather, peel, core and slice. Usually takes about a day to dry. Looks like I got 8 pears left to dry. Todays job, get them going.

Thanks Heather and Michelle, I didn't know if it was like apple recipes where you dipped the pears in lemon juice.

I was going to dry spearmint this morning but it rained overnight and it's not a good idea to cut herbs when wet because you can transfer germs/viruses.

Final batch of pears will finish today. I picked the last of the basil too, pulled the plants. Since my dehydrator was full, I thought I would try the oven method that Heather does. I do have a dehydrator setting so gave it a go. It goes right to 150 for a temp setting. They were dry in a hour or so, not very long. Which in my life is a good thing. I did (very) little reading and they said to dry herbs at 125 to speed things up. And that basil has a large amount of water in the leaves, which is why it takes so long. So why does a dehydrator say to dry herbs at 95 degrees? Either way, thanks Heather for your drying method!!

I wanted to do our apples this year but it looks like we aren't going to get many if any at all. We've had little to no rain this summer. Everything is already brown and the leaves are falling off green and turning brown on the ground.

Harvested my spearmint and have it drying in my Yellow Rose Cottage. May get another cutting before first frost in mid-November.

I find peace when working with my herbs.

Drying sage today. Sage is one of the medicinal herbs. Sage tea is good if taken at the beginning of a cold or the flu. It's not tasty but can be okay if mixed with more favorable herbs.

Michele - I'm glad it worked for you!

Sara - I have a bunch of sage in my freezer (that's where I store my dried herbs). I agree - it isn't very tasty (that's why there's so much left). I like what you said about finding peace when working with your herbs. I feel that way too - especially when I'm in the woods or fields wild crafting herbs.

Heather, the only wild crafting I have ever done is to use what I found in crafts, never to make tea or use in cooking. I was never sure of what was edible and what was not. The only wild plants I was ever sure enough of to eat were dandelion leaves and wild violets.

How do you store dehydrated pears? I am going to orchard next week if I can get pears I must try dehydrating.
Sara, didn't know sage was good for colds. I still have dried sage from last year. I'm still wondering what to do with all the sage still in garden

Today's good mood brought to you by a lot of coffee!!!

I store all my dehydrated fruit in a mylar bag in the freezer. I've found it keeps for almost a year that way - that's as long as it lasts before we eat it all. It may last longer. In the past I put it in canning jars but there got to be too many for my freezer.

Sara - I'm slowly learning what herbs are safe. Mostly I'm picking berries. We have a lot of black raspberries and blackberries that grow in our fence rows and woods. I get alfalfa, red clover, dandelion, and plantain from the fields. The woods are full of wild violets in the spring. I've got a few books that help me identify herbs and how to use them. I just don't have as much time as I need to figure them all out :)

Thanks Heather, not much of wild herbs to gather in town but the stray dandelion and wild violets. I do have all kinds of mushrooms, yellow & pinks too, popping up in my yard but I don't even like to touch them because I don't know what they are.

Drying Greek oregano this morning.
