I live in Michigan now, but grew up in Ohio in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Would like to participate as I am contemplating a move back to Ohio when I retire. I grew up in Mansfield area and my children still live there.

Wow, I am so behind on loading pictures. We continue to have our monthly meetings and have had so much fun. In December we created scented pine cone ornaments for the season. In January, we got together and and stained and strung small gourds. What fun was that! Kinda messy, but we had a great time! You can imagine the fun and laughs we had.

In February we got together at my house instead of the library so we could work on badges. We had decided for the month of February we would make bakeovers and earn our BakeOver MakeOver badge. We made a bakeover using blackeyed peas, bacon and onions, with a budget mix crust. We also made a bakeover using Italian sausage, and a mix of fresh vegetables, and crust using the Mary Jane's budget mix. Both were delicious. Even my hubby enjoyed them!

We are having a blast Sara! This weekend we are going as a group to gather maple syrup (weather permitting!). We have learned alot from each other and we are going to attempt to use our meeting to work on badges. Our next meeting we will learn to spin. I am so looking forward to it!

Well, the Intown Farmgals were out and about today. We met at Slate Run Historical Farm to learn how maple trees were tapped and how maple syrup was made the 1880's style.

The weather was perfect and the company was great!

Slate Run put on a great educational program on how they tapped maple trees for the sap in the 1880.

Oh my...what a wonderful day. The weather was perfect. And we learned so much! Maple sap is clear like water and only has a hint of sugar. Taste more like water. Did you know that in 1900 Ohio only had 5% forest? I didn't know that! Ohio has 33% forest today. I would guess because of Conservation Reserve Programs and farmers or landowners placing farmland into these programs has helped to bring back some forest. At one time Vermont did not have enough wood to cook their maple sap into syrup and came to Ohio for wood, depleting Ohio timber. Ohio ranks between 6th and 10th in US maple syrup production. This totally makes me want to tap one of the maple trees in my yard! And just look at the difference between pancake syrup and maple syrup. If that doesn't make you want 100% maple syrup, nothing will. :)

A couple of inches of sap in a bucket.
