Okay,

DH and I don't have a vacuum. I tried finding one on Craigslist, no dice. We can't exactly afford one right now, though I am going to try to set aside $20 next check for a sweeper (yes, I know they don't work as well).

Pets and us track into the house. All but 2 rooms are carpeted. Any suggestions or ideas for getting miniscule dirt off carpets? I mean, there's the old bender-down-n-pick-it-up, there's a broom (which doesn't work)...

We regularly clean the carpets, with spray and a brush (clean up after pets), but that just by itself isn't cutting it. Any ideas?

Laura, our dog sheds so bad that it's near impossible to sweep with the vacuum... My hubby runs the side of his shoe across and gathers it all up into one grab-able lump and removes it by hand. We also have simple swept our carpets with a good, sturdy broom whenever our vacuum was on the fritz, and it worked really well. How frustrating this must be for you! 'Hope you're able to find something soon! :) Hugs - Nini

The 'sturdy broom' mentioned, was it one of the ones with what I refer to as "hay" for bristles? I have the red one with black bristles right now -- they didn't have a normal broom at Family Dollar and I was desperate. Lol.

We had a carpet that wouldn't clean up well. I kept breaking vacuums. As a result, when we moved, we only considered apartments with wood floors. I know this isn't practical for you now but it is something to consider in the future. When things got really bad in our old place, I would bring out the duct tape, wrap it around my hands sticky side out and crawl around on the floor picking up the dirt. Lots of work but good exercise.

Hey! We actually have a ton of duct tape that needs using! Thanks for the tip!

My carpet is a light beige and my pomeranian decided to chew on an ink pen while I was at work. Yep. Black ink everywhere. Of course my son tried to get it from her but too late. He got it from her right away so she wasnt hurt but the carpet is history.

I would start going to yard sales. I see vacuums ALL the time at yard sales, so cheap! Good luck.

I totally second Shari's suggestion about checking yard sales (and flea markets, consignment shops etc.) for used vacs. I would be careful to open up and empty the thing really well outdoors -- extension hose and attachments, too -- spray it thoroughly with bug spray, and then quickly seal it up in a big garbage bag, just to be sure you don't bring any unwelcome six-legged hitchhikers into your home.

Meanwhile, you and the hubster might want to institute a shoes-off policy for humans and give animals the once-over before letting them in, to cut down on new dirt. Ha ha -- little rolls of duct tape on your fingers to de-grunge pet paws. What a hoot!
