I just saw on the news this morning that there has been a salmonella outbreak here in Ohio. Traced to the root cause they are pointing to fresh tomatoes served in restaurants....http://www.columbusdispatch.com/health/health.php?story=dispatch/2006/11/04/20061104-A8-02.html

I thought that when tomatoes are contaminated with salmonella it is usually from using a cutting board that was previously used for raw meats, most notably chicken...

Have things changed? Some of these reports are saying that the tomatoes can be infected through their root systems and blossoms- that was not reported to be the case when I was younger - I wonder if that is due to plant genetic engineering, or just to better understanding of the infectious process?

Brenda - I found this information from the CDC, so I think it's a pretty good source - you might want to check it out [http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5413a1.htm]. Yikes - doesn't all of this food contamination weirdness make you want to have a bigger garden next year? It sure does me!!!

XOXO, Libbie

It sure does me too!

Here is another article I found. Globalization, FDA Cutbacks Lead To Increased U.S. Food Poisoning

http://www.larouchepub.com/other/2006/3345fda_disease.html

Something to remember on this election day! You know with all the negative campaigning I don't remember a single candidate advertising their views on globalization of the food supply or a lot of other topics like animal ID that might be of interest to us farmgirls. Interesting.
