Hi all! We decided to get chicks here in our little neighborhood. Mind you, we are clueless when it comes to critters. Well - not clueless, but definitely inexperienced. Right now we have our 6 chicks (4 easter eggers and 2 australorps) in my bath tub on a couple inches of bedding. The heat lamp is set up on one end, with the temp around 90 degrees. Their feeder and waterer is set up. How long do we keep them there? They are only a few days old, so I am guessing a couple months!?!? My hubby and boys are going to build an A-frame moveable coop. I'm excited and nervous at the same time!

You got it covered, Keep the bedding clean and fresh water if they are cold they will go to the heat.

About 8 weeks old they should be fully-feathered, I feed only chick start crumble until the feathers come in, then they can go outside. Cleanliness is the key to healthy birds, remove soiled bedding daily, keep food and water containers free of poop and bedding. Once the move to bigger quarters has taken place, cleanliness is your best friend. Remove excess droppings weekly, keep water and food containers clean. I feed lay crumble and scratch grains (1/2 & 1/2) and kitchen scraps. Make the same sound every time you feed them and they will come every time they hear that sound. I call "here, chick, chick", my sister whistles a tune, and our birds come running. Count them daily so you can be aware if someone is missing or sickly.

question - one of the chicks seems to be having diarrhea - very running stool with no urine. Could it be the stress of being relocated? when do I get concerned? What should I do? Thank you ladies!!!

| I think from my experience that a noisy chick is a sick chick...so if has some diareah that's not a big concern, but if it cakes up keep the vent area free of debris with a little warm water washing and dry thoroughly. If your chicks are quiet they are most likely fine....when they are sick, chilled or having physical or emotional or mental discomfort they will chirp a lot. A.quiet chick is a healthy chick.
