Has anyone participated in an Outward Bound course? I did a 23 day mountain trip out of Leadville, CO after graduating from college. It was an amazing experience - and I really appreciated a hot shower and regular toilet afterwards. The most memorable part was when I rock climbed blind-folded 150 feet up a steep face. The website for Outward Bound is www.outwardbound.org. Ann http://annforrester.tohe.com |

I"m not, but my brother has been an instructor for Outward Bound for about fifteen or twenty years. He started doing exactly what you did--- a lengthy course as part of a sabbatical from his job. He turned around and told them he'd like a job, and I don't think he ever went back to his job as a personnel director. He started out in North Carolina, but has since led courses in the Everglades, the mountains of Equador, and all over the world doing ice climbing, spelunking, etc. Now spends most of his time in the jungles of Costa Rica teaching ropes courses.
I'm glad you liked your experience. I know it has totally changed him. He says most people go in thinking they're going to learn hard skills like sheer cliffs; but they come out with a great deal more, like how to work with people like your life depends on it. He likes the soft skills learning better. |

Mary Ann,
I'm sure that your brother loves it! There have been so many times in my life journey that I have reflected back to some of the things that I learned while on Outward Bound. You really learn a lot about yourself and how you interact with others when you are challenged to the core. I was surprised to discover that I was stronger than I thought that I was. I tended to be the team encourager too. Words can't really describe the experience and benefits. Ann http://annforrester.tohe.com |
