What makes your community feel truly rural?
We know about the sights, sounds and smells but what else is there?

A bar in a little neighboring town has a Tractor Tuesday promotion,
a discount on beer if you arrive on a tractor.
The local convenience store has a minnow discount card. Get a punch each time you buy and get free bait in the future.
A little honor system building sits on a corner with home grown vegetables available with no one guarding the place.

I have credit in any locally owned store in the county seat whenever I need it (within reason, of course). Half the time at my favorite little café, if there's a line at the counter when I'm ready to leave, I just wave at the owner and she knows I'll pay next time and trusts me to remember what I owe. And making sure to look everybody on Main Street in the eye on your way to and from the post office; chances are you know them and they'd be miffed if you didn't at least say hi. Stuff like that.

Oh, one time when I still had my office in a historic building with old-fashioned windows just off Main Street, I was working late and managed to lock myself out. No keys for the truck to get home for my spare, no key to get back in the office, too late to call a locksmith. Two waiters from a restaurant up on Main Street came over with a ladder and helped me break in through a rear window with minimal damage to the window. The next day, another guy from the same restaurant came to my front door with materials to fix the window for me! When I went later to get a spare key made to keep under the truck's fender, the hardware store owner had heard about my adventure. Apparently, they guy with the window fixings had bought the needed items there and told him all about it. You have to mind your manners in a small town!

CeeJay, do businesses in your town have people's pets in them? Almost every shop window on our Main Street has the owner's dog or cat curled up in it, watching the parade of people outside.

Yes, Mara, some of the businesses do. One art gallery that also has a coffee bar and wine bar also has Sam, the owner's dog to visit with you. He also has his very own couch in the gallery. There are others as well!

Sounds really nice, CeeJay. An art gallery with a coffee and wine bar...mmm. All you need is a bookstore somewhere close by and you've got heaven on earth!

Last night I had a local restaurant deliver supper, which I do sometimes when I don't feel like cooking. When the lady repeated my address, I could hear the owner shout out in the background, "Say 'Hi' to Steph for me! " : )

Both the hardware store and men's clothing store offer credit.
Most of the store owners in town have known my family for at least 40 years. Errands are more like a social call, especially when my dad comes with.

The art gallery is very nice . . . but small town in "attitude". When the owner of the gallery got married the first time many years ago, she asked me to play the piano for her wedding! :D

There isn't a bookstore in the same town, but there is a wonderful antique mall in an old building, a great consignment shop, a local microbrewery that makes the ABSOLUTELY BEST pizza (in a woodfired oven) . . . love the town of Dolores, Colorado!

We have a little family owned café that serves the best breakfast ever. We go quite often. But the waitresses there know exactly how my hubby likes his sausage. They know his "usual" and many times have it written down before they come to our. table. It is a gathering place for families. The staff knows everyone and always make you feel welcome.

They are usually open on holidays. So hubby makes sure when we eat there on holidays that he leave big tips for the girls as a thank you. On Mother's Day we had the "older" waitress, Hubby left her $50 tip on a $40 tab.

Those are the things that make our community feel close knit.

Also, if your kid gets in trouble, somebody will call you immediately. When I tell my kids 'I have eyes everywhere.' They know it's true.

One of the postal workers in the post office in Cortez, Colorado asks me, when I bring in a package to mail . . . "mailing more aprons off are you?". He knows I make and sell aprons!

Our former postmistress and her husband dropped by one day just to check out how our fruit trees were doing and we had a great visit. Over the years she usually asked what was in a package that we picked up at the post office and wanted to see how they were coming out. Now that they had both retired they were looking for ideas.

I live in the City now the last 2 years...no small town feeling of community any more...BUT
even in Cities...you can etch out that feel of Community. My husband and I go to Barnes and
Noble Book Store 4 days out 7...and have for about 8 yrs. We know everyone in there and they
know us. They worry about us if we are not there during the week and we worry about them and pray for their
families. They have given us Christmas and Birthday Gifts at different times (depending on the
manager at the time). Invited us to their weddings etc. And that is just the people that work
there. We also have met so many wonderful customers besides. Many regulars like us....and we
have established friendships and bonds. Community is all an attitude of the Heart more than a
particular location (rural verses urban).

Hugs,
Peggy

Our town is proud of the heritage of the Chinese workers who worked on the railroad. Every year, we have a huge firework display to commemorate Chine New Year. This display would rival a big cities presentation on Independence Day. It's even choreographed to music.
