| Good Lawdy, but we could sure use some tips on how to remove that awful smell out of carpeting. We have used just about all the normally available stuff from the usual chain stores. There has to be something that really works! |

Well, I've tried them all I think. Sigh...
I do find that one, which is kind of expensive at Wal-mart, works the best. It's called "Urine Gone"
I've tried a mix of vinegar and water, and many other sprays, but this one seems to keep the cats from going back and doing it again. It's found near the borax and washing soda (at our nearest Wal-mart).
I'd be interested to see what others have tried too.

You may not have an alternative to cutting the soiled part of your carpet out and throwing it away. Are you sure the floor underneath the carpet hasn't been affected? If it is, no carpet cleaner will get to the root of the smell.
That said, I would like to mention a product I found out about (Fizzion) from cat behaviorist Jackson Galaxy, who endorses it. I broke down and bought some and was amazed by how well it works. It comes in the form of a tablet that you drop into a spray bottle full of water (about a quart). It fizzes (thus the name) and then you spray it on whatever smells. It makes CO2 to attack smelly stains. Good stuff. It's expensive, but I found that you don't really need to buy the starter bottle with the extra refill tabs. Just use any spray bottle (you might already have some laying around) and buy a set of tabs which you can get for as little as about $7. The mixture you make with the tablets doesn't last forever -- a few months, though. I also like that it isn't all nasty chemicals that can harm our pets (and us!). Like you, Kris, I've tried them all - even the one you suggested. I shutter to think the money we've forked out so far. We even tried the one where you mix baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and Dawn drops together to no avail. The odor keeps coming back. Aargh!
Rosemary, we are avid watchers of My Cat from Hell and love Jackson. He is spot on and so compassionate with furry friends. Thanks for the link, and I assure you we'll make the purchase from his site.

Nature's Miracle works great when cleaning. I'm not sure if it works after the fact.

While I don't have the product name (because I put the last 10-12 ounces from the huge vat container in to a spray bottle), our vet sells an enzymatic product that has really worked.
We had an older kitty who had some control issues late in her life, and this enzymatic cleaner was the only thing that did away with the odor or both solid and liquid waste deposits that missed the cat box. The enzymes in the spray actually "eat" biological residue, rather than just mask an odor.
There are several different brands put there, and none of them are cheap. I would recommend buying a small bottle first before investing in the vat-o-cleaner size because you may have different results. |

| Karen, delighted to find another Jackson Galaxy fan! My husband and I love him. We both read his book, have you? It's called "Cat Daddy." Pretty raw in places, but one of the most amazing things I've ever read. He's a special guy. |

RE: Cat urine in carpeting. We had ours cleaned steamed (Thank you Stanley Steamer). The nice man said as he walked out the door: "If you don't replace the padding, you don't get rid of the smell."
(and every succeeding cat will wonder about the large litter-less litter box you have in your living room.)
WE pulled up the carpet ourselves.. Cut Out all the STAINED padding - and got some padding from a carpet place and laid it down ourselves. Put the carpet back down and secured around the base board.
Everything smells great. The villian cat had to find a new home though, he was unrepentant. So sad, he was a beautiful manx.
