Does anyone know how to keep mice out of your car? I park my car in our garage and keep the windows closed but since the weather has turned cold I've been finding 'evidence' of a mouse. I can't figure out how one could get inside. Maybe through the a.c. duct. Anyway, how can I keep him out. Any ideas?

Go to cartalk.com. They probably have several ideas on how to keep rodents out of cars.

They go into get warm and build nests in the cars insulation. They will chew through wiring ... so I would set traps or decon them. As fixing the wiring in a car is very, very costly!

I am with Teri they are very destructive and once they die if in the car you will never get rid of the smell.
Decon is your friend.

mint extract repels them. I use it around our garage doors on on the wheels of our travel trailer every winter.

We get mice....and even worse rats...in our work trucks during the winter because our shop is next to a field. We have resorted to keeping loaded traps or small trays of Dcon or similar on the floor that can be easily removed for safekeeping when the truck has to be used. The Dcon makes the varmints thirsty so they will leave the vehicle to find water and not come back. Cats work well too if you have one. I hate to kill animals but I have no time for rats.

Diane, I put a dollop of pb on a mouse trap and put it under the seats and we catch them that way. We're surrounded by wheat fields so they're always getting in and it's a constant battle. Kathy, thanks for the tip about using mint, I've got a bunch of mint extract so I'm off to give it a try.

Thank you for all your great suggestions! Kathy, I didn't know about the mint extract. That's a great idea. I like the idea of 'repelling them' but if it comes to ruining my car and the wiring I will pull out the big guns and load a trap. We have corn fields around us Annika. You would think they would prefer to stay in the field and eat corn! OMG Sherone, that story on your blog is too funny. If I were driving and the mouse appeared, I would lose it for sure! I have tons of horse barn experience and pulled a few mice out of water buckets but...me and a mouse in a car together...don't wanna think about it! YIKES!!

| I have read that dryer softner sheets in your car will keep them out....I'm trying it and so far so good. Don't think the brand is important but I used snuggle - maybe they don't want to snuggle with snuggle? |

| The dryer sheets brand does seem to be important. I have friends that store and restore cars during the winter, and they swear that the only sheets that are worth using are Bounce. I don't know why, must be the chemicals in there that keeps them away. I know when I shut the cabin down for the winter, Bounce is placed everywhere. with of course traps, but since I have done this come spring I find much fewer dead mice in the drawers and their hiding places. Hope this helps somewhat. |

| Deterrents are the way to go. I would be careful with D-Con or any other poison, though. I've heard they can sicken, weaken, or even kill desirable predators that eat mice. |

Kathy, thanx for the oil of 'mint' tip.
we use Irish Spring soap... we grate it and put several spoonfulls of the shredded soap in a 8' piece of tulle netting (panty hose works too), then we tie one under the hood of the car engine...and one on the inside floorboard... so far so good...no rodent invasions...

Moth balls work some of the time as well. Put them under seats, glove box and console between the seats.
