My hubby and I came out to the Sheanandoah Valley to celebrate our anniversary, only to find the government shutdown changed our plan - the national park is CLOSED. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

We're staying at a fabulous inn called The Blue Rock Inn near Sperryville VA, and one of the ladies here recommended a hike outside the park. We learned a wonderful new hiking destination today and will be back again to explore other trails. Some nice yellow and orange happening with the leaves, which was really nice to see.

Fall is trying to happen, but it was in the mid 80s today, so it is difficult to feel autumnal. A fall-inspired dinner at the inn's restaurant helped, though. Butternut squash and apple soup with an herb-infused oil drizzle, and pork loin roast with a savory apple tart (puff pastry surrounding a baked apple with sage) is pretty darn fall-like, wouldn't you say?

Anyone in the VA area - look this place up and come by. Great staff, beautiful setting, a nice pub and fabulous food. Throw in some fall color and this is just about perfect.

Unfortunately here in SC, we do not really get to enjoy Fall... the leaves don't really change colors, nor does the air get the crisp fresh feeling. On the flip side, it is a great time of the year to go to the beach, as the mass majority of tourists are gone. Our family goes up to NC every year to pick apples. In November we attend a Living History Field Trip Day at one of the local plantations, oh and there is the wonderful corn mazes that we'll go to later this month. I think my favorite thing to do, though, is take a picnic lunch with the kids and plan out Operation Christmas Child projects that we want to do for the year.

CJ, those are some great photos! Are they recent? I am hoping to go for a mountain drive soon! I am craving it!

Happy Anniversary Cindy! I hope you had an awesome time. It sounds like it was a blessing in disguise and more romantic too ;) Okay I just checked out the Blue Rock Inn and it looks SO NICE! And the Fall menu is making my mouth water :) Good for you Cindy!

Shannon, it would be the perfect time to check out the beach! I love going places off season when hardly anyone is around :) We enjoy picnics too!

Sharon,
Those pics are from last year. We took a drive this last Sunday and the color changing was just starting . . . later than usual, it would seem. We drove up the West Fork road, quite a distance past the Fish Creek trailhead and found some aspens changing. Perhaps we'll go again this next weekend.

On a chilly Saturday fall morning, hubby and I went on an excursion yesterday. Stopped at Fahrenheit Coffee in Mancos, CO for coffee and a bagel. Then headed up to Transfer Park where we did a bit of hiking, basking in the sunshine and enjoying the beauty! These pics are closer ups of "my mountains" that I can see from my kitchen window.

They are the LaPlata Mountains in the San Juan Range of the Colorado Rockies and are between my house and Durango, CO.

Jersey Jim Lookout tower, used to be an active fire tower and I remember being in it when I was a kid and it was still used for that. You can now rent it for overnight stays. In the background is the peak of Hesperus Peak which is a few hundred feet over 13,000 elevation

The view of the mountains and specific peaks from across the Box Canyon where the Mancos River runs. Yes, there is fresh snow on the peaks

Rim Trail through the oak brush. At one point I saw about eight wild turkeys on this trail. YAY!!

Because of our very strange weather this year with severe drought and heat, then unusual rain, the color changing process for the leaves is kind of wonky and the colors aren't a brilliant as they usually are.
But I STILL LOVE IT!

The air was brisk and chilly here in Kentucky today...still enjoying the beautiful leaves of the season...I love to watch the leaves when they get caught up in a whirlwind...my brother in law sent me some mini gourds today to add to the ones I already have...I just love everything about Fall...

Hugs!
