I really want to get my daughter involved in 4-H. She is 5 years old and started kindergarten this year. We are right on the border of 2 counties (and 2 states, for that matter). One I've heard is not as great of a program, but she could start now. The other has what is considered better, but she can't start until first grade. So my question is: do I put her in the one that she can be in now and just transfer to the better next year, or just wait and start her in the better one when she's in first grade? Any 4-H'ers have any advice?

WAIT, and start in the better one, I've seen kids walk away from 4-H due to bad leaders/programs, some so bad it ruined it permently for kids and parents alike...

yes, I agree wait, there is plenty of time. If you get a bad start or your daughter gets frustrated at all now, it may be enough for her to not want to do it at all. Our son is 10 so we have done regular 4-H for 2yrs & mini 4-H for 2yrs...he loves it, but it is a lot of work. This maybe a good time to get online & just check out project ideas for next year. Good luck!

I would look at what they offer. It varies quite a bit by state. We live in a rural area and they offer livestock, dogs, shooting sports, and all sorts of gardening, crafts etc.. I would check out both programs and see what4 4-H covers what you are interested in. In our area at 5 they can do branch buds, which is limited but a good start to 4-H.
