I'm Susan. I'm a homebody and a newly discovered "farmgirl" in northwest Indiana. I found MaryJane's magazine at Borders and am excited to discover a wonderful resource. I am a single mom of a 16 year old son, who is also a homebody but not a farmboy! I'm a special ed. teacher for children with severe disabilities. I picked up the magazine to look at the aprons. I wear one at school so I can use the pockets for picture communication symbols, markers, stickers, treats, and more. When time allows it will be great to make up some things that will be attractive and functional. I love the bakeover recipe and can't wait to try it. I use convenience food heavily, and this looks like something I can adapt for my pizza loving son. When time allows, I love to write, read, sew or knit, especially putting bits and pieces to good use. The article on the old mill caught my eye. A restored mill near me grinds cornmeal in replica flour sacks. When the cornmeal is cooked, I use the bags in quilts. I recently found a bag of vintage quilt blocks that I'll put together some day! Latest project is knitting hats and scarves for the mitten tree at the library. I'm looking forward to making connections with other "farmgirls!" |

Greetings and a hearty welcome, Susan! I think we find out, sometimes by surprise, that we all lead a bit of farmgirl life, and you certainly have a good start on yours! I started out as a newlywed 30 years ago letting my farmgirl side shine, then found myself divorced with two little sons, and at work full time in high heels and slick suits. I threw myself into that wholeheartedly in order to provide a good life for us, but clung to the bits of my "former" (real) life as much as I could. You will love it here with lots of kindred spirits. Have a great day! Nance |

Welcome, Susan. My two best friends are both named Susan! My 26 year old son was never an outside guy, either. I used to pay him to help me weed - LOL! He's a computer geek. But he has a good job and that's what he enjoys. Your flour sack quilt idea sounds fantastic - everybody on this website is so talented(except me-no sewing abilities at all) - you're going to fit right in!

Hi, Susan and welcome! I have three not-so-farm-inclined children! Hopefully one day that gene will pop out of them. :) When I mention a garden or chickens or any other farm-related subject, their eyes glaze over and they start moving towards the door to escape. And we only live on a half an acre ourselves! How much work could it be? Thanks for being such a caring teacher. I have a son with disabilities, so anyone who teaches and cares for children with special needs has a special place in my heart. Glad you found us.

Another Hoosier Hello, Susan! I am just outside of Indianapolis and am glad to see another Indiana gal here. Don't know if there has been any success forming a FarmGirls group for us yet but it seems like there are a few of us now. I'm new too. Everyone has been so nice. Welcome to the group. Candace

Hey Susan, You ARE close! How cool! It's been a few months since I checked the highland Borders-so glad to know they are carrying the magazine now! Now, I must ask where this restored mill is!? :) Is it the one at Deep River Park? My cousin got married there a few years ago. It was just lovely! Sounds like you will have a lot to contribute to the group! Looking forward to getting to know you better Susan! Rhonda

Hi Susan, Welcome aboard! It is a warm and caring group.
Life may not be the party we hoped for...but while we are here we might as well dance! |

Candace and Rhonda-great to know we're in the same area. It'll be good to compare notes on living the farmgirl lifestyle in Indiana.
Rhonda-yes it is Woods Mill at Deep River Park. The cornmeal is sold in the mill at the front counter-not the gift shop. It's sometimes under the counter so you have to ask for it. Unfortunately, I think this is their last weekend til May. |

Kathy, we most definitely like to hang out in the same places! I volunteered one summer at the fur trader cabin at the Bailly homestead. I checked out the new Borders over the weekend. It's quite impressive. I'm proud I resisted the temptation to buy any new books to add to my staggering piles around the house. Maybe there's enough of us in the area to start a group? |

Hi ladies, I was just out at Buckley a few weeks ago photographing the barns, sheep & pioneer cabin. I may use some of the photos on my website. It was very lovely to walk out in the back forty on a sunny fall day! OK, so...can I ask where exactly you ladies are? I'm near Lowell. How funny if we turn out to be neighbors! Rhonda

The last 2 years I haven't volunteered much, but before that I did the spinning at the Bailey Homestead for the Duneland Harvest Festival, and I've been with the spinning group out at Buckley Homestead too. I love to do that, but just don't seem to have the time.
I live just southwest of Demotte, and I work in Valparaiso, so I cut a path through NW Indiana every day! Kathy |

Hi ladies. I was reading this forum this morning and I found your quote Marybeth about life not being the party we hoped for, but while we are here we may as well dance. I just loved that, but just yesterday I was talking to this older lady in my complex and she shared with me the time she almost drowned in a big river. She heard a voice telling her to relax and float. After hearing it several times she did as instructed. She finally floated to shore but when she got out of the water she was nearly frozen. She heard that voice again telling her to "dance". It was a struggle but she eventually started to dance and by doing that her body began to warm and she and her dog walked to safety. Isn't it just like Him to tell us to dance when we are in such trouble? Thank you for that quote Marybeth. JOY

Rhonda and Kathy, I live in Hobart and work in Highland. My son takes oboe lessons in Valpo. Kathy, I wonder if our paths have crossed. I always watch the spinners at the festivals. I knit and experimented some with a drop spindle but never got farther than that. Regret missing both the Chesterton and Lowell festivals this year. Rhonda-I look forward to checking out your website. |

It would be fun to get together. Maybe at the gleaming new Borders at the mall? |
