We are not for sure yet, but we kept one of the meat chicks, because the others pecked her almost to death. We put her in with the barred rocks, who mothered her back to health. We just kept her, because she was both a layer and meat. We figured we'd have more eggs.

However, the older the "chick" gets, the more she looks like a he. I bought all pullets, but they gave us a few extra too. Hmmm.

Kind of irks me that I wind up with a "he" when I paid the higher price for females, but they did throw in a few extra (for some odd reason).

I'll have an update soon enough. There are feathers growing on "it" that sure look like a rooster. Hmpf.

Kristina, I'm so sorry about your disappointment. I was reading somewhere that this actually can happen - where the female starts to take on the male traits - but I can't for the life of me remember where. You may not have been cheated, like you think. It actually may just have happened!

I just did a quick search for you online and saw this link: http://www.mypetchicken.com/backyard-chickens/chicken-help/I-ve-heard-that-a-hen-can-turn-into-a-rooster-Is-H234.aspx Makes me wonder if maybe she was just injured when she was attacked as a chick. Could happen!

Keep us posted. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Hugs -
